Daily Photo – Amazing Milford Sound with Silky Fog

Some friends and I just made the trek down to Milford Sound for a little photo getaway. you NEVER know what the weather is gonna be like down there. We had good karma I suppose and ended up with incredible weather! It was a great road trip… great tunes, good friends, good wine, and good snacks! Oh, and a few good photos here and there too… a lot more to edit! Oh btw, that is the famous Mitre Peak there on the right sticking out through the clouds.

A Colorful Corner in Old San Juan

Go to Old San Juan!

Even though it’s my 2nd time in Puerto Rico, I never had the chance to go to this great old place in the city. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon and an evening… the food and drinks are amazing to grab in between photo shooting sessions!

Travel Photography Thoughts from San Juan

Here’s a little tip video I made while there. Now that you see the video, you might see me drop in a few more “detail” shots over coming weeks and years from this place.

I kept coming back to this corner again and again… one time I got here and there was this gal crossing the street in a shapely black dress, and I thought it made the scene so much more interesting.

Streaming Light in the Mosque

Local Guides

If you’re a Passport Member and you see the bonus video below, you’ll see the incredible value of having a local guide. In this case, he found a gentleman in the mosque that sings the verses and stories inside of this beautiful old room. You can also see me talking about taking photos in the same mosque as today’s Daily Photo!

Amazing Singing in the Mosque

And here is that video I mentioned from above. I sent this to our man Stu that helps out around here and he said it was his favorite passport video so far! I hope you like it too… it’s a bit different!

Daily Photo – Streaming Light in the Mosque

How pretty is this place? This is one of the oldest mosques I’ve ever been inside. It’s the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan and it began construction in 1356! The back room has this enclosed area where the light goes absolutely crazy when you use a tripod.

Moonlight Clouds – Queenstown at 7:30 AM

Favorite Timelapse

Timelapses are SO time consuming. I guess that is inherent in the name itself, but I really get so busy I don’t have time to do these too much. But I thought I’d share with you my favorite timelapse… I made this after my first 30 days living in Queenstown… I decided to make a time lapse every day!

Failed Time-lapse Story!

So I thought I’d talk about a little failure… maybe it will save you time in case you’ve had a similar idea!

When you watch this video below, you’ll see a rather failed attempt at a timelapse. I had this bright idea to try hovering the quadcopter (DJI Phantom 4 Pro) in the air for about ten minutes and then have it automatically take a photo every 3 seconds. This is one of the many photo options. Anyway, I did it, but I could tell the quad was moving a bit in the wind (up, down, right, left, forward and back). It was basically like the worst tripod in the world.

Now, the quad will TRY to stay as still as possible. It uses a lot of tech to do this, including over 15 GPS satellites to try to keep it still.

So, I copied all the pictures to a directory then used LRTimelapse to do a bit of tweaking before rendering it. Then, it looked like this:

Then I figured I needed to stabilize it. I found two ways to do it. One would be to auto-align all the images in Photoshop (put them in layers then run a script to export each layer). But that was kind of a Rambo mission for 468 photos. The other way to do it was to use After Effects and “Warp Stabilizer VFX.”

As you can see in the 2nd video below, it still looks pretty ropey. Unusable for me. It’s kind of a cool effect but to me. it just doesn’t feel quite right. Anyway, that’s three hours of my life I’ll never get back… but thought you might enjoy the failed journey anyway! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Moonlight Clouds – Queenstown at 7:30 AM

I took this around the same time I made the 30 Days and 30 Nights time-lapse above. The winter in these southern places make the sunrise rather late! I took this about 7:30 AM in the morning while the moon was still out over the sparkling Queenstown. I set up the tripod on the balcony, and this was our amazing view!

Daily Photo – Adventuring on Everest!

Here’s a photo I got smack dab in the middle of the day while at Animal Kingdom at Disney. What a day! My son and daughter had just joined me for that crazy ride there. It’s one of my favorite roller coasters in the world. It’s WAY too scary for Isabella, but Scarlett absolutely loved it! Not long after this, we went to go to The Lion King where the girls were selected to come dance with the troupe! It was another great family day at Disney! πŸ™‚

The Swimming Platform

Great Hard Drive Suggestion

My friend Tony showed me an amazing little external drive when he was out here for our New Zealand workshop. It’s just incredible! So small and functional. It’s called the Samsung T3 and it’s smaller than an iPhone. It comes in two flavors – the 1TB and the 2TB. It’s a bit pricey, but so convenient!

And here’s another photo from the same location as yesterday, but looking in the opposite direction. It’s a good tip β€” always turn around and look behind you. We tend just to walk forward and look forward. It’s a good skill to work on (even I need to work on it…). And I often surprise myself to turn around and see something so different and stunning!

Deep into the Dart River Valley

Book Suggestion

I recently finished a good book called “Zen and the Art of Archery.” It’s a great book (a bit older) about a Westerner that goes to Japan for five years to learn archery (and himself). It’s a nice short read… I finished it during 5 hot tub sessions!

Behind the Scenes at the Glenorchy Dock

Here’s some video footage of when I was on the famous dock in Glenorchy. Tomorrow, I’ll be editing a pile of photos I took while in this very spot. Here’s a challenge for you! First, my photos and try to edit them yourself. See how they turn out… and then, tomorrow, brave Passport holder, you can see how I edited them! It’ll be a fun exercise. Again, there is no right or wrong way to edit, just different interpretations of the light and scene.

For those of you that are Passport members, you can see the behind-the-scenes video above from when I took this photo. Tomorrow, I’ll have the video where I edit this photo above along with two others. I had great difficulty choosing my “favorite” out of the three. I have a feeling that yours might be different than mine. I like this one though the most. It’s more epic to me, and I really like the tiny figures in the photo to give all those mountains in the background some scale.

And if you’re not a Passport member yet, please join! You’ll get to see a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff like this as well as the brand new HDR Tutorial that was released just a few weeks ago!

On the Way to the Burn

A Special Video Day!

Hey for you Passport Members I have a special video today… probably one of the coolest behind-the-scenes videos I’ve ever made! It was quite a struggle, I’ll tell ya… I spent 24 hours camping out in a very remote area of the Southern Alps. We choppered in and there was a Bit More Drama than I would have liked! Anyway, I hope you enjoy the video… and if you haven’t signed up yet, just give yourself a slightly late holiday present! πŸ™‚

24 Hours in Earnslaw Burn

This is a good video! I think you’re really gonna like it… you can see some of what went on when I was getting some special photos for a patron. You can also see a nearly tragic mistake I made! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – On the Way to the Burn

Here’s a photo I took during one of my many helicopter rides to Earnslaw Burn on a particularly still day. This is Lake Wakatipu below over near Glenorchy. It’s probably only THIS still a few times a year, so I felt lucky to see it’s mirror-like surface. Note this was a MUCH less windy day than when I had to camp out overnight without a tent. AHEM….

Daily Photo – Bel in the Wings

Here’s a photo I talked about a little in the new HDR Tutorial, even though it’s not HDR. We were in the costume party and got extremely hot, so we decided to step outside and get some of the cool Venice air. After we went out, we were locked outside! And just inside those glass doors was the band, so no one could hear our cries for help. They saw us moving around out there, and just thought we were dancing! πŸ™‚ But, naturally, I had my camera with me and I thought she looked awesome in this shot with the light hitting her.

Daily Photo – The Misty Mountains

This is the final photo I got when driving back home on this loooong day of photography. It had its ups and downs, but finally ended on this huge up. I do have one regret here β€” I forgot to zoom in and take some more detailed photos of the mist. Oh well, I can’t think of everything! I did get a nice big panorama as well which I have not edited yet. Let me know if you’d like me to edit that one on video!
