I admit that I am very spoiled flying on some great airlines, almost exclusively 100% outside of the United States. Whenever I come back to the US, I am struck by how bad airlines are, and how ridiculous so many little things are. For example, look at this crazy upsell from United.
Daily Photo – Beautiful Venice in Morning Light
The two best times to explore Venice are at sunrise and sunset/night. In the middle of the day, cruise ships dump off thousands and thousands of people, so it’s quite touristy. That, in itself, is not bad, but it can have a certain feeling of chaos. It can also be hard to get photos when there are people crawling all over everything. In the middle of the day, after the crowds arrive, I usually go to a quiet non-touristy place to eat an early and long lunch, have wine, and then go back to the hotel for a 2-3 hour nana nap so I am fresh for the night!
I recently visited an amazing place in Fiji called Laucala Island. I’m old friends with the General Manager there and I primarily went there to take photos. But, while there, we decided to add a video to the mix. If you’re a Passport Member, you’ll hear more about the client work agreement that went into this and see how I edit the video. I’ve gone back-and-forth with their marketing team a few times, so I’m trying to make everything perfect for them, being an over-deliver kinda guy like I am!
If you’re a Passport member you also get full access to my all-new Quadcopter tutorial that will hopefully save you countless weeks of trouble, as you learn from all the mistakes I have made! There is a great section at the end about editing video too that I think you’ll enjoy.
I used Screenflow Pro to do all the editing for this video, even though I actually recommend Final Cut or Premiere for more serious videos. Screenflow was just barely strong enough to do all the heavy lifting for this one. Anyway, in this video, you’ll see how I chose to edit and re-organize this video based on client feedback.
I found this place by accident when I was arriving into Venice and trying to find my digs for the Biennale. I now know my way around the confusing town, but it’s really kind of a drain when you are dragging a big bag all around the city with you. Most of the effort is getting up and down over dozens of bridges… and there is always a sinking feeling that you’re going completely the wrong direction and will have to go back over that same bridge again!
Based on today’s Venice post, I was thinking about the time Rene fell into a canal in Venice, Italy. This video below never fails to make me laugh. I mean, you know what’s gonna happen, but it still always cracks me up.
Daily Photo – Textures of Venice
Last time I was in Venice, I was there for a long 3 weeks. That’s a long time to be in a place! Hey, but I got to know it really well! It took me about 10 days before I stopped getting lost. Well, sometimes at night when I would walk around my friends, taking a drink of wine every time we crossed a bridge (we call it bridge-wine), we would end up getting quite lost. That may have been a contributing factor to Rene falling in a canal one night.
Here’s one of about 1,000 photos I took of the awesome costumes in Venice during Carnivale. I highly recommend going to Venice at this time of year if you are interested in taking photos of people but kind of shy. Every one of them loves having their photos taken. And, it’s totally free. I was afraid they would charge money or something… but they do it for the fun of it. I sometimes wonder what kind of people they are. My guess is they, themselves, are secretly very shy, and this is their one chance to safely be extroverted and the center of attention.
Come and visit our workshops page to see what’s on tap! In this video below, you’ll see this Wayne Norrie guy that I mention… he’s the first one to speak in the video. What an eloquent dude!
Daily Photo – Rene in Venice
Here’s my bestie Rene in true form. We were in Venice for my workshop during Carnivale, so we all got dressed up and had a fancy dinner. It was completely ridiculous, especially with Wayne Norrie at our table. We’ve never laughed so hard. He said some of the craziest things that I would be nuts to repeat! You can see here how Rene made a short attempt at a rueful rebuttal, but then how was immediately ransacked with a hilarious laugh to which there was no defense.
Here is a video I did live on Facebook where I edited this photo using Aurora HDR 2018. I hope it is helpful to you! 🙂
Daily Photo – My Final Sunset in Venice
I very rarely process photos twice, but I chose this one as a good candidate because I had processed it earlier with a previous version of Aurora. Since the new Aurora has a lot of new features and algorithms, it was a perfect chance to see the differences. I think this version of the photo is way better than the first time around.
I took this on my final night in Venice. I was there for a total of three weeks and the weather was rather dismal most of the time. The final night had this great sunset and I was so excited!
It’s been a while since I’ve plugged my fun video tutorial (that also comes with a ton of textures) about how to get this sort of look with your photos. Grab it in the online store here!
Daily Photo – A Textured Venice
This is one of my favorite little tricks whenever the sky gets a bit too boring, but the rest of the subject matter is great. For this texturing, I went a bit more grungy and distressed. It reminds me of some of the museums I visited around Venice. Many of the old paintings had stains and just “time” on them. The colors were often muted and they look like they might have been dipped into the canal from time to time.
Wow this seems like so long ago! We did a workshop in Venice and the final night ended in a costume party. Everyone got all dressed up and this is our videographer, Bel. We didn’t really do any filming this night, so she could just rock out there in her costume and have a good time!
Today’s Venice photo gives me a chance to mention a really cool tutorial we did in Venice. Here’s A LINK to the tutorial. It’s one of the highest-quality videos I’ve ever made. Enjoy!
Daily Photo – Strange Ideas in Venice
One night in Venice after dinner I had an idea to take a photo like this. I wanted to add as much darkness and mystery as possible. This is not usually the case because I shoot with a tripod, which I use for long exposures to get a lot of light. But I thought I’d mix it up this evening and try something a little different.
Here’s a friendly reminder to check out my Insta 360 Review that I finished last month. It’s a heck of a cool camera, even if you’re not that serious about it. I think it’d be great fun to make family videos to share with the extended family too!
Daily Photo – Easy Photo Shooting in Venice
If you enjoy taking photos of people but are a little afraid of the social awkwardness of the practice, just book a room in Venice during Carnivale! These people LOVE having their photo taken. They basically slowly waltz around Venice all day long and pause here and there so people can take their photos. They don’t charge money; they just enjoy being the center of attention. We all know these kind of people, like my daughter Scarlett for example, who you may know from my Instagram stories.
