The Earnslaw Burn

New Passport Video

If you’re an awesome Passport Member then you get to see today’s 360 video. It’s part 4, where I give a tour of my patron’s mansion in Beverly Hills and you can see where one of the works will hang. Right in the entry way, and I’m very honored. Parts 1-3 are various scenes of me flying out to the photo location under the glacier, forgetting a tent for our overnight stay, working on the photos over the project, etc. Anyway, enjoy Part 4 below ! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – The Earnslaw Burn

Here’s one of the final three works for the mysterious patron. What a fun (and tough!) project. But I’m very happy with all the final works. And, most importantly, so is he and his whole family! I like making people happy like that… kind of the purpose of creativity, right? To make yourself and others happy.

The Long Cloud at Jack’s Point and How-To Video

New How-To Video

I have a new technique for making panoramas which I think is better than using Lightroom or anything else. If you’re a Passport Member, you can see it embedded in this post! πŸ™‚

Passport Exclusive – New Panorama Tip

Here you go! I hope you like this technique… I pretty much only do panoramas this way… 95% of the time, I’d say.

Daily Photo – The Long Cloud at Jack’s Point and How-To Video

This is a great little spot in Queenstown to take photos. You have to cross the bridge and start heading towards Milford Sound. But about 15 minutes after that, you can turn into a little housing community called Jack’s Point. The clubhouse there has this pretty tiny pond in front. It’s often smooth enough for a good reflection shot. Today I was using a prime 45mm lens and decided to make a very hi-res panorama of the scene.

Earnslaw Burn

Part 4 of the Earnslaw Burn Story

If you’re a Passport member, you’ll see extra content today. I have a patron that has purchased some special work, and today has a 360 view of his mansion and where the work will hang! You can also see his amazing Ferrari on a turntable garage. Awesome!

Passport Exclusive: Earnslaw Burn Part 4

Check out this cool 360 video I shot at a patron’s home in Beverly Hills. Remember you can grab the video and twist it around to look whichever way you wish. I’m sorry it’s so shaky… I feel like a field reporter in Syria or something.

Daily Photo – Earnslaw Burn

Here’s one of the three finished works. This is a panorama made out of about 100 different images in this magical place in New Zealand. If you’ve watched the four videos we made for Passport subscribers, then you can see everything that happened! Helicoptering in, me forgetting the overnight tents on the glacier, etc etc.

To give it a sense of size, my son, who is 6’3″ is standing under the waterfall on the left. See him? He’s wearing a red top.

And the second video below is a short edited video that shows a bit of the footage. Like I say in the video, none of it is great but thought you’d like to see anyway! Most of life is Just Showing Up, right? Well I showed up this morning to take that video, and not much interesting turned up… just thought you might like to see how many days are banal! But that’s okay, the real reason was to test out the new firmware.

Daily Photo – 7 Dials in London

Speaking of quadcopters, here’s one of my favorite photos from London at this famous street where seven roads come together. I flew this one with my friend Stu. I was using the HUGE Inspire drone… it’s really much too massive and ungainly! After I got it set up, I had to go through this very time-consuming IMU calibration… thought it would never end… but I finally got it up in the air to take this photo!

Look at all those pretzels! If you are watching how I made this photo (from a single RAW file) in the “Passport” below, you’ll see how I asked this guy if he had any low-carb pretzels. I got a very strange look in return… By the way, a few of those lamps on the left side ended up back at our home in New Zealand thanks to my little girls! πŸ™‚

Bleached Tree in Milford Sound

More passport Goodness

For just the price of a few cups of coffee a month, you can be a passport member and see a new 360 video today where I’m talking about my goals at Milford Sound. I was able to accomplish a few of them, and I failed at others. I have some fun photos from this trip coming up! πŸ™‚

Passport Exclusive – My goals at Milford Sound

I often arrive at a location with amorphous goals. I’m sure this happens to you too. I get to a cool place, even one I’ve been to before, and then I have a sudden worry: “What the heck am I going to shoot here that is interesting?” Here’s another video for you, gentle Passport Member (thx again!) – where I talk about some goals… It’s good to have some goals and then vary from your main course… as is the case with today’s photo that was taken during this outing.

Daily Photo – Bleached Tree in Milford Sound

This was taken early in the morning at low tide. The tide here goes dramatically up and down. At high tide, you can just see a few branches sticking out of the water, but at low tide, you can walk about half a kilometer out into the bay and get shots like this. I shot this at f/1.4 with the Leica 21mm on the Sony A7r Mark II.

Daily Photo – The Golden Fields in the morning

Of the two videos you saw above, you may recall that I was having A LOT OF TROUBLE trying to choose which one was my favorite. In the end, it was THIS one because I really like the warmth of the flowing grass fields here. Well, I kind of make up my mind then go back to other one, once again filled with self-doubt! πŸ™‚

Daily Photo – Driving up Mountains

Here’s Ruby who joined me on my first sojourn to the Earnslaw Burn. At one point, I asked her to help get my tripod ready, and she ripped out one of the legs like it was a robot trying to attack her. There’s some little piece that fell out that we never found. Now, I have to treat this one leg very gingerly, because it comes out all the time. This was just one of the casualties of equipment during the 4-5 trips we made out into the bush!
