Worship

A new NFT Collection on Foundation

Sometimes in moments of fear, or from fear of death, the root from which all fear begins, people turn to faith and religion to try to give it all some sort of meaning. As I’ve traveled around to all seven continents, I’ve talked to many people I meet about religion… from taxi drivers to locals in restaurants to people who work in places of worship. Even though I don’t subscribe to any set of rules laid out by any religion, I think in most cases it’s a pretty decent thing, as long as no one is getting hurt or trying to make another group feel bad. I personally used to be a fairly hardcore atheist until I tried Ayahuasca and a few other plant medicines that have shown me there is something else going on. I don’t know what it is, but there are some entities out there that are helping us along. One message I continue to get: Everything is exactly the way it is supposed to be. And that’s comforting, although it is easy to view that via a nihilistic lens.

This is a first collection of images from a range of impressive and often inspirational places of worship around the world. View it here on Foundation.

Flat Earth. New Zealand.

Daily Photo – Flat Earth. New Zealand.

I always have weird and surreal experiences on this golf course. Firstly, of course I take my camera all over the place along with my clubs so that looks a bit odd to everyone. Also, as it is a private club there is often no-one else nearby on the course so it’s just empty and surreal. I also listen to strange music while I roll around, taking photos, and the stopping occasionally for some golf. When I finished here on 18 one evening, I was actually the last person around… even that awesome clubhouse there in the distance was empty…

Up and Away. USA.

Daily Photo – Up and Away. USA.

I was lucky enough to be invited by NASA to the final few launches of the Space Shuttle. Wow that really was one of the most impressive things I’ve ever witnessed. What really surprised me is when the wall of sound hit me and how it shook my skeleton like an earthquake.

Distant Mist. Iceland.

Daily Photo – Distant Mist. Iceland.

While in Iceland, I traveled through a lowlands area early in the morning. A mist, a video game like mist, started moving quickly across the ground and through the distant hillocks. It was all so surreal that I barely remembered that I should be taking a photo of this. That was a strange feeling, since the whole reason I was there was to take photos! 🙂

The Blues. New Zealand.

I wish I lived closer to this lake in Tekapo so I could go out there more often to see all the pretty sunsets across the glacier-fed blue water. Whenever I do drive back and forth to Christchurch, though, I usually stop here for a bit! It’s actually one of the reasons I prefer the 4 hour drive to Christchurch from Queenstown rather than the 30 minute flight… there are so many places to stop and take photos!

#354

Daily Photo – #354 from the Edition365 2021 Exhibition.

A few months back art3.io and the British Journal of Photography got in touch about an online exhibition and auction they were putting together which focused on life during the pandemic. This is the image that I chose to submit and you can see the OpenSea listing here. I recommend checking out the whole selection as there are some awesome photos in there. Also, you can virtually view the full show in a really cool interface here.

As for the image… I had quite a strange experience just before lockdown. I went to one of my favorite meditation and yoga retreats near my home in Queenstown named Aro Ha (the Maori for love), and I had some amazing deep sessions. One of them centred around the heart and the idea of being alone or being worthy of not-being-alone. It was quite wonderful and therapeutic, and I came out of it quite excited to engage with a lot of other people and stop being such a hermit. Well, just as that tricky universe continues to throw us curveballs, lockdown came into the present scene so I was forced to be alone for even longer. It seems the cycle of being alone and together are two sides of the same coin, and you can’t have one without the other as they are a reflection of the same truth.

The First Time I Ate Horse. Iceland.

Daily Photo – The First Time I Ate Horse. Iceland.

My friend Helga has been wonderful enough to invite me to her farm in Iceland many times. It’s always a fun trip up to the north to see her. But I always get a little lost. Finding the particular turn-in along this fjord is constantly a source of confusion, especially at night. I don’t know why it is so difficult to me, because after I get there, it is plain as day. And I’m sure all Icelanders think I am crazy… but it’s like a hidden door, fey and fleeting with the light, and you can only see it during certain portals of time.

Until the Cows Come Home. New Zealand.

Daily Photo – Until the Cows Come Home. New Zealand.

The South Island of New Zealand is absolutely huge. It looks tiny on the map, but it feels as big as California. Something else that makes it feel so big is hardly anyone lives on the South Island, so you can literally drive for hours and never see another car. This image was taken in the lakes area on the way to Lake Ohau.

Bora Bora Bora. Bora Bora.

Daily Photo – Bora Bora Bora. Bora Bora.

Here in Tahiti is one of the first places I took my family on an exotic location. The kids loved it. They basically stayed in the water 100% of the time. When I wasn’t playing with them, I would sneak away to take photos of this incredible archipelago.

Geothermal Genie. Iceland.

Daily Photo – Geothermal Genie. Iceland.

I’ve never really been the kind of person that attaches too much mystical meaning to shapes, but in this picture, I think I see a genie coming out of that geothermal vent. This was shot in Iceland on a rather chilly day. Here’s a fun fact. “Geysir” is the only Icelandic word that is used in English. I’m 98% sure this is true.
