Here’s a little peek inside the latest fractal creation. This is the flat version of the 360 render which stretches out to envelop you in VR/360. It’s a crazy render, days to create… 30,000 frames, hundreds of gigabytes of data and custom audio but the early versions are an awesome journey to experience.
It’s been a while since I shared some of my fractal art. The last fractal, Heart Chakra, which was a collab with the awesome Tina Guo sold out on OpenSea. Now there are 2 new renders incoming with existing Heart Chakra holders getting a free one! Here’s a little preview from one of them which has an interesting collab and backstory for another day…
Here’s a slice of the Heart Chakra fractal I worked on with the awesome Tina Guo. You can see the full video here which features her awesome cello. If NFTs are your thing you can grab those over here and each contains a different written “heart musings” by Tina and myself.
Heart Chakra – Machine Elf 103 – Trey Ratcliff and Tina Guo
This Machine Elf collaboration brings together the generative fractal work of Trey Ratcliff and music composed by Tina Guo to form a visual meditation. In this first release from the series, a limited edition of only 20 videos, each has a variety of different characteristics. Because Tina created this music specifically for the heart chakra, each of the 20 pieces contains a different written “heart musings,” each of which are embedded into the videos at the end. Each of the 20 pieces have a unique rarity based upon the word content of these musings. Tina’s sound meditation became one of the mathematical waveform coefficients that fed into the generation of this fractal. You will notice it move and dance with her cello. Also, #20 of 20 is quite unique, as it is the only one that is rendered in 360, thus making it usable in VR.This Machine Elf collaboration brings together the generative fractal work of Trey Ratcliff and music composed by Tina Guo to form a visual meditation. My friend Sam Wave released his latest single and I think you’ll love it. I did the visuals with a very different kind of fractal you can see in the link below. It’s a very liquid, molten glass sort of ballerina dance that feels good with his music.
A 360/VR version of the video is available on Sam’s channel over here.

Well, this one is certainly different than many of the other Machine Elf creations I’ve been releasing. I’ve had these images of everflowing liquids that are no different than the life they sprout. Of course, the cool thing about fractals is you never know how far you are zoomed in. I’ve been working on this one for ages and tried out 3 or 4 kinds of music and nothing stuck until my Burning Man roomie, The Jonatas of Brazil (who introduced me to Ayahuasca), sent me this new soundtrack he discovered. As he would always say to me and Rene (my other Burning Man roomie) before we go on a trip together in his delightful Brazilian accent of broken-English words: “I have 700,000 musics, and of all the musics, dis, dis, DIS is the best. Yes yes yes…” He says that every time, and he’s always right. Wow do we have some stories. Anyway, thank you my lovely friend 🙂
Machine Elf 100 – The Pineal DMT | Visual Fractal Meditation | Trey Ratcliff & Joshua Ryan
I’m extremely interested in how DMT is indeed an endogenous molecule (meaning naturally produced internally) that is in our bodies, plants, animals, and everything that is alive. What’s all that DMT doing in there? Not even any of the top studies (more scientific studies happening now at Imperial College London and Johns Hopkins University) can figure out what the hell all that DMT is doing inside of us. I experientially know with a surplus, you certainly have an ego death and leave your body to travel to “The Matrix” in a way. It’s quite tough to describe. But, if we’re in a simulation or a video game, you get to meet entities and Machine Elves that are building the reality around us. I know that sounds crazy… but, if you know, then you know.
As for the music, I collaborated on the it with Joshua Ryan, and he sent along these notes: “This was inspired by the visual entirely, no reference material was used and the journeys the music takes is an attempt at conveying the many fractal environments you can see. The seamless transitions flowing into one another melodically not diverging from the heavy meditative tone – just as the visual component achieves.” You can follow awesome Josh is on that new app called Instagram or something at @joshuaryancomposer or visit his website at www.joshuaryancomposer.com.
This was another fun collaboration with a musical artist I really respect, Jesse “The Scumfrog” Houk ( @thescumfrog on Insta ). In a very small world situation, this song, Just Before Dawn was performed many many years ago at Burning Man and I listened to the whole set out in the desert. Then, of all things, he actually has a house here very close to me in Queenstown, New Zealand! He would put on fun deck sets at night and now we’re like supa tight! He’s so talented… a true treasure!
If you’re a Passport Member then today you’ll get to see an early cut of a new fractal creation. I think this one is going to be very meditative. I’m trying to look for a good meditation to lay on top… maybe something from Mooji!
Machine Elf Demo Reel
Here’s a little highlight reel I made of most of the fractals created up until March of this year. I’ve done many more since, so I’m looking forward to making a new cut soon!
Onwards!
Inside the Flower painting
I think this one is coming along very well. I’m about halfway done. Here’s what I want to change + add.
– I don’t like the violent spins in the beginning, so I will insert more frames
– I think some of the colors are too bright – especially that neon green
– I’m gonna try to get it back to that flower thing at the end… not sure how I’ll do that.
– I want to make it about twice as long
Here’s the first Machine Elf creation where I layer in a beautiful meditation from Mooji, one of my favorites at the art of a good mind-freeing session. Mooji is always quite relaxing and can help you stay zen when life gets a little too much. This is one of the more organic creations that is based on some different hidden symbology I’ve seen here in New Zealand.
Daily Photo – First Day of the Santiago with Kevin Kelly
A few years ago I decided to walk the Camino with Kevin Kelly and a great group of people. On day one, we assembled here in Portugal right by the bridge that crosses into Spain. We had not even gotten started yet, and then we all decided to take a rest! 🙂 The walk may have had more talking and resting than walking, and that’s okay with me too!
