The Lighthouse on Key Biscayne

Today for Passport, Part 7 in Antarctica!

In today’s video for Passport Members I show how I am getting pictures of snowflakes on black wool gloves in Antarctica while camping out in the Dry Valleys. This is the seventh part of some Antarctica videos I have created for Passport Members, so enjoy!

If you want to jump to the “Lesson” part of this video where I talk about shooting snowflakes, then go right to the middle. In the beginning, I talk about peeing in a bottle and in the end I show the extremely awkward way of getting into and out of the little hole entrance for our tent.

Daily Photo – The Lighthouse on Key Biscayne

I visited this lighthouse many times while there in Key Biscayne. On my final night, there was a great sunset so I got the quadcopter up to see if I could get a better shot. It turned out to be 100x better than the shot on the ground. My first idea was to line up the sun with where the light comes out of the lighthouse. It looks pretty good but felt a bit forced. I then moved it over just to the left and thought it looked a lot better.

The Flower Gardens of Singapore from Above

Landscape or Portrait?

Today’s photo is obviously a quad shot, aiming straight down. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t really matter how it’s oriented: portrait or landscape. The only place it seems to matter is on phones and tablets! Since most people view things on mobile nowadays, I tend to twist things around to portrait mode so you can see more on the screen at once.

I’ve been to Hong Kong many times, but not until this last time did I go tramming! I don’t know if that’s an actual word or not, but I define it as the ability to get on a tram for just a few bucks and ride it all day. It goes through some of the older sections of Hong Kong and just kinda casually rolls along. Sometimes old people get on the top level and share a bottle of wine and just watch the city go by for hours and hours. I was only on there for a short time, but I made the most of it!

If you click the “Singapore” category above, you’ll see some previous photos of these Gardens by the Bay at night time when they light up to an amazing light show. This is what they look like in the middle of the day from above. I think it’s quite a mesmerizing little scene! You can see a curve there along the left side. That’s a bridge high above everything that connects a few of the trees. Unfortunately, it was closed this time, but I do recommend the little trek!

Stepping Stones in Koh Samui

Baby Burner

My friend (and awesome aviation photographer!) Jessica Ambats came to her first Burning Man this year. I only got to see her once at the photo walk, and she was happy to have her baby there. I always think it’s awesome and brave for people to bring their kids to the Burn. She just sent me this cute video she made while there.

Daily Photo – Stepping Stones in Koh Samui

This beautiful little spot in Koh Samui is a serene location to watch the sunset. Anyone can go here and have drinks to watch the sunset, and you don’t have to be a guest of the Ritz-Carlton. They actually do set up little drinking tables on these stepping stones, but no one was out there, so I quickly removed them so they wouldn’t get in the way of the shot!

Tane’s Brother Nemo At F/.24 Alcohol Content

I made three cool 360 videos on my most recent trip to Tokyo. The first one of them is Very Passive! It’s just me and my son getting off the subway and walking around Shibuya. I tried not to talk during it just so you could see the sights and hear the sounds of Tokyo. The second you will see tomorrow!

Daily Photo – Getting Drinks in Tokyo

This is one of those hundred tiny bars in Golden Gai. I think one reason we came in here is because the bartender was pretty cute. It’s a shallow reason, I know, but it’s as good as any. She didn’t speak a lick of English, but she seemed to know the name of every cocktail, which was more than suitable for the evening. I went in here with my 17 year old son Ethan and our friend Nemo (pictured above).

Hong Kong Without the Haze

Using the New Lightroom

I have a love/hate relationship with Lightroom. It’s more of the latter, really, and not enough of the former. But, I do like how they moved the Dehaze tool upwards. I use it quite a bit more now! Today’s video for passport members shows the best-use-case scenarios for it.

Now that the Dehaze tool has bubbled up to the top, I’ve been experimenting with it more and more. In this video, you can see how it works SOMETIMES with these rather hazy photos from Hong Kong. Well, in some cases, it is amazing. In others, it doesn’t look so good.

Daily Photo – Hong Kong Without the Haze

Of the successful de-hazing shots from Hong Kong, this is one of my favorites. I never thought I would be such a fan of government housing, but these buildings do make for a great tableau! I left a little bit of haze in there because I think it helps to add a sense of depth to the image. I had to zoom in there close to see what was happening on that sports field. At first, I thought it was baseball… but baseball is not popular in China (it is in Japan). It’s two soccer fields, or football as they call it in most of the world.

The Abandoned Yacht in the Middle of Government Housing

CNN Article on the Burning Man Exhibit

One of my photos was on the front of CNN.com the other day, linking to this article on the new Burning Man exhibit at the Smithsonian. I have three works hanging there… if you make it over there, be sure to talk a selfie and send it to me! 🙂

Passport Goodie Day!

For Passport Memembers I made a cool 360 video here in the studio showing all the stuff I took on this trip to Hong Kong and across Asia. So much stuff… and believe it or not, I’m cutting down quite a bit!

How did I pack for this trip across seven different locations in Asia Pacific? Here, you can see all the stuff I crammed into my bags in this 360 video. Remember that as you watch this, you can grab the screen and twist it around to look in any direction you desire!

Daily Photo – The Abandoned Yacht in the Middle of Government Housing

How wild is this scene? This is the kind of thing that gets me so excited about Drone photography! I feel like a little kid, having so much fun seeing these sorts of things like a bird. That reminds me, we are putting our finishing touches on a Beginning Drone Photography and Videography tutorial. It’s going to be a great one! The final edits are being made now and we’ll try to get it to you as soon as possible!

Beautiful Hong Kong Government Housing at Night

Passport Early Look

I made a post-processing video for Aurora HDR users on how I worked on this shot and Passport Members get an early look. It was a lot of fun to work on! I’ve actually been saving this photo until I got back into the studio because I wanted to take my time working on it.

This incredible housing complex in Hong Kong was just asking for a photo! If you want to know where this is, check here on Google Maps. You may notice my final photo looks a bit different than what you see in the video below. I made a few more adjustments after the video ended:

1) I lightened up the upper floors towards the back of the complex. I felt they were a bit dark.

2) I desaturated some of the extreme yellow. After I looked at the shot, I felt it was too yellow and orange in some spots.

3) I made the canvas WIDER and stretched out the side-parts wider so that it seemed a little less narrow.

Daily Photo – Beautiful Hong Kong Government Housing at Night

Hey, when it comes to government housing, it’s hard to get more interesting than this! We had a long day running all around Hong Kong and exploring with my new friend Simon. He was a great local resource to show me some of his favorite spots. I think this was my final shot for the evening before we decided to go off bar hopping together! And for you Passport Members I hope you enjoyed the post-processing on this one.

A Beautiful Housing Peninsula in Hong Kong

Fun Tip for Today’s Passport Video!

Today’s daily photo was extremely difficult to process. I’ll be honest with ya! I had to figure out a few new things I have never tried before, mostly because I could not get the quadcopter up high enough… so I had to take a ton of panning photos. So it’s kind of like a landscape, but kind of not, because the 3D objects below shift perspective as the quad translates.

Anyway, if you’re a Passport Member then you get to see the making-of video, along with the 60+ other videos I have published for you. Enjoy!

And here’s the making-of. It actually would have been easier if I had launched from the nearby hilltop so I could get the quad even higher, but, alas, it was too late.

Daily Photo – A Beautiful Housing Peninsula in Hong Kong

These distinctively shaped buildings are all over Hong Kong. Someone told me that this is the style of cookie-cutter government housing, although it comes at different price points. These are some of the more expensive ones because of the location right here on the peninsula. The whole thing reminds me a bit of Sim City! And I hope you enjoyed the post-processing video if you’re a passport member!

Stairs in Golden Gai

Now this one is just plain nerdy. Since I was hanging out with all these scientists, they all had different areas of expertise. This gal was an expert on ventifacts!

Daily Photo – Stairs in Golden Gai

Wow, I’ve been posting a lot of photos from Tokyo lately! Sorry about that; I’m just excited by so many of them! This is that tiny area near Shinjuku where a hundred tiny bars are packed together. Half are up these narrow stairs (each stairway goes to a mysterious bar). I liked how these two stairwells were right by one another. I was just kind of enjoying looking at them when I heard footsteps coming down, so I took a quick photo!

Daily Photo – More Beautiful Rain in Tokyo

I couldn’t figure out if I wanted to shoot in tiny little streets like this or huge streets full of electric signs. They both seemed to work really well. I think the busy streets were more chaotic and it was hard to find the exact sort of shot I wanted. In these smaller, more intimate streets, I was able just to focus on one or a few subjects and play with the compositions and colors.
