To get this look, I used my Movie Night Presets pack which I really recommend. It doesn’t work on all photos, but if you want to give your night photos a little bit of an interesting look, I recommend it. It’s heavily inspired by Blade Runner and a lot of other “dark movies” that I enjoy.

When I look back at this amazing rainy night in Tokyo, it just makes me want to return! This night was actually completely freezing and below zero. Most of the “rain” was actually sleet. I stayed up extra late, roaming the streets of Shinjuku, hoping that the sleet would turn into snow but it never did.

Last year, we won Apple’s App of the year, and that was very unexpected and exciting. We have over 3 million downloads from their store and our stores, so it looks like we really hit a nerve for this thing. It’s especially great for beginners that want to add a special look to their photos.

This is getting me excited about going back to Tokyo! 🙂 I went on a reconnaissance mission there with my son to look into him teaching English for a year after he graduates from high school. I don’t know if we made a lot of headway with the research, but we sure had a good time anyway! I spent most of this last trip around Shinjuku, where all the lights are over-the-top amazing and make for great reflections in the rain.
Today’s photo is a good example from my new Lightroom Presets! Every night I was there, it was very rainy, so that gave me a good excuse to go out and explore. I spent most of my time in Shinjuku, mostly because of all the ambient light and Blade-Runner like signs.
One thing, in particular, I’ve noticed about Tokyo is their penchant for opaque umbrellas. I think this actually makes a lot of sense because the umbrella holder can see where they are going. I, myself, would also use an umbrella of this sort if I was not so busy taking photos of people using these sorts of umbrellas.

I think I was awake for over 20 hours this day while exploring the rainy and snowy streets of Tokyo. It turns out that I chose a great location in Shinjuku for my hotel. I had never stayed in that area before, and it’s one of the most “electric” Blade-runner areas of the city. I go here every time anyway, but when your hotel is here, you have a reason to go each night!
Today we’ve got some goodies for Passport Members!. This is probably my favorite of the Antarctica Videos! It talks about when I had a fight with my Geophysics Professor and I dropped my double major in that because of it. It went on to teach me some important lessons by accident!

I couldn’t figure out if I wanted to shoot in tiny little streets like this or huge streets full of electric signs. They both seemed to work really well. I think the busy streets were more chaotic and it was hard to find the exact sort of shot I wanted. In these smaller, more intimate streets, I was able just to focus on one or a few subjects and play with the compositions and colors.

I can’t remember exactly how I found this amazing place in Tokyo. I kept track of some of the best night displays around the city. In winter, it is so bitterly cold there that there is not a lot to do outside, so many locations create beautiful light displays. This was my last night there, so I went to go and tick this one off my list. Much to my excited surprise, there was a lot of rain and snow, so everyone turned up with umbrellas. This one was a bit of a strange scene because they kept the Disney song of Beauty and the Beast on a loop. It was pretty cool until it became annoying!

I hung out in Shibuya crossing for about 2 hours in the rain. It was great! There were so many cool outfits and interesting umbrellas to see. It was almost information overload and I could not figure out where to look next. The pauses were when people would stop at the intersection while waiting on the crosswalk. It was a lot less chaotic and it gave me a chance to find interesting subjects like this gal. I have since sent her the photo and she loves it!

These are a mix of presets between extremely dramatic and some a bit more subtle. A good all-rounder for a subtle effect is “A Sundipped Flaxenpony” and a more extreme one, one of my favorites, is entitled “Surprise Bluejob”, which will give you that blue and orange feel that sometimes works great. Don’t forget to try “Nightman Daymon” or maybe your photo calls for the sweet sound of the “Legendary Plop”. There’s also a Black & White preset you can’t miss called, “Luke Milksquirter”.
