The Space Between Here and There

Daily Photo – The Space Between Here and There

Here’s another one of the images from my 1000 Stories from 1000 Places NFT drop. It sold out in minutes, but they are now available to trade on OpenSea and X2Y2, etc so be sure to check them out.

Oh, and there is something special about this NFT… In this collection of 1k1k, there are six uber-uniques. That means if you are holding this in your wallet on March 31st 2023, you can have the full print shipped to you! The real-life prints range in price from $35,000 USD to $95,000 USD, and you’ll join amazing collectors like Edward Norton and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Now on with the story.

I woke up with a dead rabbit beside me.

I know this isn’t the sort of thing one wants to hear when looking at this timeless and Hawking-esque beauty, but it is the strange truth.

I arrived at sunset at this remote and beautiful church in the middle of the south island of New Zealand. There were quite a few people milling about, taking countless mobile-phone photos of themselves holding the church in their little fingers or using selfie-sticks. I think they are just perhaps making a visual diary, or trying to create a story of themselves, which is fine and okay.

My plan was to stay late and sleep outside. I had my sleeping bag and my friend Stu was there. We set up our bags by the church, had a few glasses of wine, put on some music, and talked about nonsensical things and laughed into the night. Around 3 AM, my alarm went off, so I slipped out of my bag to capture this scene. The next morning the supine rabbit appeared between Stu and me. We were bewildered and laughing.

On the main continent of Antarctica are countless glaciers that spill out across the landscape. This was located in the Dry Valleys, where a helicopter took me out to camp for about a week.

There was absolutely no one around, and there is a strange loneliness standing near something so daunting and timeless. I would walk along the edge for miles, occasionally stepping over ice-boulders or across icy streams to touch its surface.

Chinatown in London around midnight. It was the evening before the Chinese New Year and everyone was getting pretty excited. The next night was to be absolute chaos, but this night things still had a nice electricity in the air.

I also made a little video here of what things looked and felt like… sometimes I record little videos here and there to remind myself. I don’t usually publish them because the editing takes so long! So I just kind of save them for myself. It helps when I edit the photo later to remind me of how things felt at the time.

A great revelation I came to in Africa was how much I loved elephants. It’s not like I hated them beforehand… who could hate an elephant? But my care-level for them was somewhere between indifference and like. What ended up quite surprising me was how peaceful and interesting I found the creatures to be. I think they operate on a different time scale. I also sometimes wonder if they are in another universe, but just appear to be in ours.

Amazing Castle on the Edge of the Desert Gorge in Morocco

Daily Photo – Amazing Castle on the Edge of the Desert Gorge in Morocco

This is the amazing Auberge Le Festival in the gorge just on the edge of the Sahara Desert. After spending several nights out in the arid desert situations, I started to work my way back towards the Atlas Mountains. This area is very near a fantasy (but real!) oasis, and it was absolutely perfect in every way. If you ever go to Morocco, be sure you look up this unbelievable place!

Tokyo Through the Glass

Daily Photo – Tokyo Through the Glass

This is just yet Another Amazing Part of the city. At first, when I went here, I thought that it would be a big city like New York, but, just, you know, Japanese. But it’s really so much more vast in terms of the buildings and the lights and the action (and the safety!). There are literally so many places you can go to and see this kind of scene that it is mind-boggling. Even though I have been there, my mind still boggles.

Having a Dip in the Pool in Bora Bora

Daily Photo – Having a Dip in the Pool in Bora Bora

Is there any place better in the world? I’m not sure I can think of one while staring at this scene! Which should you get in? The body-temperature sea with the sand beneath your toes, or the body-temperature infinity pool where there is a little place to set your drink and nachos. Decisions, decisions!

Leaving Saint Mark’s Square in Venice

Daily Photo – Leaving Saint Mark’s Square in Venice

Venice has thousands of tiny alleys that twist this way and that, and before you know it, you end up in another square. This is the biggest square, San Marco, and there are about 7 exits to this square (as with most). Here’s my favorite of them all… as evening falls, this way is the most beautifully lit for another adventure in getting lost on purpose!

The Impossible Blues of Lake Tekapo

Daily Photo – The Impossible Blues of Lake Tekapo

Well when you get to see this for yourself, you’ll soon discover they are not impossible! It does of course depend on the sun and some of the other ambient light, but this is a pretty standard color. It looks extra nice with those little white cliffs too. Right below them, you see something that might be beaches, but they are not… that is just some of that white chalky stuff that is being brushed back into the water.

Arriving in Antarctica

Daily Photo – Arriving in Antarctica

After a 10+ hour plane ride on that LC-130 on the right, we landed on those skis you see beneath the plane on the ice shelf. It wasn’t the smoothest landing in the world. We didn’t have windows by the seats (we were strapped into the walls like GIs about to parachute into France on D-Day), and the pilots later told me we landed so hard the tips of the wings almost hit the ground. Fun!
Anyway, after we got off, we boarded one of the largest land vehicles in existence. As you can see, it has the name “Ivan the Terra Bus.” Thank God it had a heater in there, because it was a little colder than I expected, and I expected a lot of cold.
