Communist Housing in Shanghai

Death and Taxes

This video is too funny. (Click the title to see the full frame.)

Where did all my money go?? from r/funny

Daily Photo – Communist Housing in Shanghai

This is kind of an interesting place, I think! This is part of the old “French Concession” in Shanghai. This particular apartment complex had five different units. As you can see, each unit had it’s own set of water pipes so that the government officials could keep track and make sure one person did use too much of the shared water. It’s the same way up in the bathrooms, where you have to choose one of the five valves for the shower and toilet.

Mont St. Michel at Dusk

Daily Photo – Mont St. Michel at Dusk

It’s not a short drive to get from Paris to London, but we decided to make it a little longer by stopping here in Normandy. We actually had our bus overnight here at the castle and in the morning we drove over to the famous beaches from World War II. If you click up there on the “France” category, you can see one of the amazing sculptures on the beach there.

Today, if you’re a Passport Member then you get to see my final edit of this photo. Last week, I shared the 360 video of when I actually took the photo (and I was scared about getting into trouble for my tripod!). Enjoy!

Happy Woman in St. Petersberg

A New Episode of My Podcast

In this episode, part 2 of a conversation while walking on the El Camino in Spain, I talk with Kevin Kelly about one of his many projects, the 10,000 Year Library. We also talk about what to do with all the existing libraries in the world… access to information… the future of libraries and knowledge curation… and more!

And if you missed it, part 1 is here.

This reminds me a lot of today’s daily photo ๐Ÿ™‚

Daily Photo – Happy Woman in St. Petersberg

I only had one quick day in this awesome city. I tried to make the most of it by taking as many people photos as possible. Some of these Russians had the grumpiest faces I’ve ever seen. I think they were so confused while I was taking the photos… it doesn’t seem like a hobby over there at all. I hardly saw anyone else carrying around cameras for street photography. My theory is that the older generation that lived in Communism for so long are just generally distrusting of others… especially others with cameras. But that didn’t stop me.

Exploring Vienna

The Egg

Here’s an amazing 2-minute short story called “The Egg” by Andy Weir. Now that I’ve tried DMT many times, I’m sure it’s true! ๐Ÿ™‚

Daily Photo – Exploring Vienna

The kind of art that was in this museum was not incredibly exciting to me, but the museum itself was beautiful. This one is the easy-to-pronounce Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien. You know how sometimes you’re in a city for a while and you keep saying the same word over and over again. And then, you FINALLY figure out what the word means just as soon as you leave the city? Yeah, well I saw that word “Wien” everywhere. I then felt dumb when I figured out that’s the Austrian name for Vienna.

The Party Tree in Hobbiton

96,000,000 Black Balls in LA Reservoir

I found this short documentary on Reddit pretty interesting. The only thing I didn’t understand is why the balls are black instead of white. Also, it’s hard for me to believe that a little bit of that plastic doesn’t leech into the water supply. They never exactly gave the molecular make-up of the balls.

It’s been a few years since I have been to Matamata on the North Island and seeing these photos make me want to return. The farmers that originally owned (and still manage) the Hobbiton Movie Set have always been very generous and kind to me, so I try to repay them with as many photos as possible. In a way, this is an easy task, since it’s impossible to take a bad photo there.

Downtown Moscow

Awesome Japanese Grandpa

Here’s a great story about a new fashion mogul in Japan at https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/hanashimada/japanese-granddad-grandson-clothes-instagram

Daily Photo – Downtown Moscow

Who would have ever guessed this is the Moscow skyline? Not me! I took this from the balcony of the famous White Rabbit restaurant. Even well-traveled people rarely visit Moscow for a variety of reasons. It’s hard to get there. Visas are difficult. It seems a bit “scary” to most travelers. However, I know a few Russians and they are all a bit crazy in a fun way… so I was excited to go there and experience thousands of crazy Russians. I was not disappointed!

Belem Tower in Lisbon

The Incredible Winslow

This guy is absolutely amazing. How does someone have this ability?

Daily Photo – Belem Tower in Lisbon

This was on the must-visit list in Lisbon, Portugal. I went here with Rene, and it was another time that he fell in the water. He doesn’t actually do it that much, but 2/3 times have been with me. One time was in a Venice canal just after we had parted ways. Another time was when he stepped on a sea urchin in front of a girl and jumped randomly into the ocean. This reminds me that I need to get to more water-based locations with Rene.

Notre-Dame in Montreal

Passport Sunday Goodies

If you’re a Passport Member then you get to see a cool new 360 video I shot while in Notre Dame here in Montreal… some behind-the-scenes of the making of today’s photo!

360 Video of Notre Dame in Montreal!

Well, this started out very sketchy. I was SURE I was gonna get caught for using a tripod in this holy sanctuary… But, there is a good surprise ending, as you’ll see in this video! Don’t forget you can spin around the camera and look in any direction you want! ๐Ÿ™‚

In an upcoming video, I’ll show you how I edited the final shot.
