Along the West Coast of New Zealand near Haast

Daily Photo – Along the West Coast of New Zealand near Haast

I don’t think this area has an exact name, but it’s about 30 minutes north of Haast on the south island of New Zealand. This area was so cool and it makes me want to explore it a lot more! I loved how the ocean was undercutting this cliff face and the trees would just tumble into the water. It should go without saying that I took this with a drone! 🙂

Yellow Bridges in Pittsburgh

Daily Photo – Yellow Bridges in Pittsburgh

I must have walked back and forth across these bridges like 30 times! They were so photogenic and really popped as the night colors came online. The bridges had a great pedestrian walking area too. The city is smartly laid out with parks all over the place so it gives you a reason to wander around from bridge to bridge and park to park. I’ve been in many cities where the downtown area is very poorly planned and they are not walkable at all. A few cities that pop into mind are places like Dallas, Orlando, and Reno. They’re fine cities… don’t get me wrong… just not really a “joy” to walk around like Pittsburgh.

More from The Vessel

Daily Photo – More from The Vessel

Wow, this is such a cool place. There’s not a bad photo of it! I was trying to figure out the economic model for this place. It must have cost tens of millions to build. But there is no entrance fee or anything. It’s part of the “Hudson Yards” project, so maybe that was something they agreed to build for free for the city in exchange for taking over that area of the city to build commercial and residential real estate buildings. That’s my guess, and I’m probably right. I didn’t take the time to look it up… I find it’s more fun to wonder about things and try to figure them out independently.

Workflow Fun on Passport Sunday!

Well, I try to make workflow as fun as possible today for Passport Members. Today, you see the process I went through before Burning Man to make sure I had a clean library for the event. I did this again before Africa!

Speaking of Burning Man…

Here are a few of my favorite photos for you!

There in the gypsy’s creation. It pulsed around us like a thick red vein; a timeless conduit that promised to hold a time machine between worlds. And, I’d have it no other way, as every time machine should come appointed with the comforts of the sultans as they slowly wind throughout the edges of the Orient. The colored lights cast new tones and shadows upon the rich, supple textures. Small windows around the edges gave outward portal-glances to worlds and times that whizzed by, each one inviting a new pause to the story. The light, I noticed, did something unexpected as it tumbled and flowed and rolled across the skin, drifting over small sinuous shapes as the crimson rays slid up and over the flowing curves of a dune in the middle of a faraway desert. The lines would only stay a moment before the wind blew them into a new form. The light tore time away from the shapes, and I could not figure out what was happening until much later in the story.

The ground shook and the air crackled as the metal bent and strained around my body. The screams went animal and blood fell folded back into the sand.

Now on with the show…

This is another common question I get: how do I set up different LR Catalogs for the road? Well this shows what I did to set up my catalog for Burning Man this year!

Trey’s 360 Podcast – Kevin Kelly on the Mirrorworld and the Currency of Experiences

In this podcast I’m wandering through a remote area of Yosemite with Kevin Kelly. There is barely any evidence of human habitation here so what better place to whip out a 360 camera and discuss the future of AR and technology.

If this is your first time seeing a 360 Video, note you can grab the screen and look anywhere!

And here is the audio version…

Daily Photo – Niagara Falls

Wow! I was quite impressed at Niagara Falls. I try not to be jaded and stuff like that… I’m always full of gratitude and thanks for places that I go. Although, sometimes, I’m not “blown away” by what I see. Well, with Niagara, I had low expectations. I don’t know why. Maybe because I’ve seen 10,000 photos of it. Anyway, I was quite wrong – it was amazing! The amount of water flow is absolutely unbelievable… and it was so cool to have these little boats for context. There are American and Canadian boats that head out into the spray. You can tell the difference because the American boats have people in blue ponchos and the Canadian ones have people in red ponchos.

Textures of the Li River

Textures Tutorial

Today’s photo uses one of my favorite techniques! Make sure you pick up my Textures Tutorial in the store. It comes with a ton of textures that you will love too!

Daily Photo – Textures of the Li River

Finally, something not from the USA! I’ve been sharing a ton of photos from my USA tour recently… mostly because I’ve been away from home in NZ for three months and don’t have access to my mother lode of photos! I edited this photo for a few hours on the plane. I love using textures… I hope you try out the tutorial above and enjoy it too!

Incredible Pittsburgh

Daily Photo – Incredible Pittsburgh

Who know Pittsburgh was this beautiful!?! I certainly had no idea! I didn’t know it was so colorful… that was maybe the most surprising thing to me. There’s a little hillock/mountain that you can ascend via a funicular. We took it up around sunset so we could take a variety of photos as the sun was setting. This tends to be my favorite time to shoot: just after sunset so there is a mix of artificial and natural, ambient light.

Near the Flatiron Building in NYC

Daily Photo – Near the Flatiron Building in NYC

Every time I am in NYC, I end up near the Flatiron Building for some reason. I usually just randomly wander the streets, but this is definitely a place that always enters my field of view. On my very first night, there was this incredible fog out that made for some very moody shots.

The Diner in Philly

New Way to View EXIF

Now, when you click through to the image on SmugMug, there is a new “button” on the lower left that lets you see the EXIF. It will scroll in from the side and you can see all the nitty-gritty details. I had to do it on this one because I could not remember if I took it in Pittsburgh or Philly!

Daily Photo – The Diner in Philly

Philly had some great neon signs! I would pass this one almost every night on the way back to the Ritz-Carlton. By the way, thanks again to everyone that came out to the art talk there. That was a really special and fun night. It was great to see my friend Joseph Mina (@hawaiianstarman on Insta) again too! 🙂

Boston Just Before Dusk

My first photo of Boston

Here’s my first photo of Boston, about 13 years ago…

Boston at SunsetBoston is great and I am sad I've only spent a short amount of time there. On this evening, I walked along the waterfront here to look at all the various angles and light levels. They were all good! That's a sign of a good city when it is hard to take a bad photo of it!- Trey RatcliffRead more here at the Stuck in Customs blog.

Daily Photo – Boston Just Before Dusk

Memory is a strange thing, I must say! I was in Boston about 13 years before I took this photo (as you can see from the photo above). Obviously, I like my new photo 10000000x better, but the strange thing is I barely remember being in Boston 13 years ago. And, like, this is before I was drinking or anything, so I have no excuse. I just can’t remember why on earth I was in Boston or what I was doing. I don’t remember where I stayed or how I even found this place. When I was back here last month, I definitely had a strange deja vu. Well, obviously, I was here… yeah, memory is weird.
