Laucala – Stuck in Customs

High Above Laucala Island

I have an all-new photography tutorial!

I recently returned from spending about a month in Africa (Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Madagascar) and each country had completely different photography situations. So it’s not just about travel photography, but it touches on pretty much everything in the seven lessons that include packing and equipment, landscape photography, HDR, People and portraits, wildlife, mobile photography, and street photography.

If you get the bonus edition, then you’ll also see how I organize my photos and handle DAM (Digital Asset Management) in addition to getting a copy of all the photos I share in all the lessons.

As well as all the tech talk, there is quite a bit of inspiration and philosophy about travel and life embedded into the story-telling. There seems to be an increasing segment of my audience that is interested in how a creative life can also be a more zen, present, and loving life. Some people get that; others are somewhere on a path of self-discovery through creative arts.

As usual, if you’re not super-thrilled, I’ll give you all your money back! So, there’s nothing to lose and a lot to gain

Daily Photo – High Above Laucala Island

This is one of the most incredible resorts in the world! There are several restaurants on property, and this one is out on this beautiful little connection between the main island and a peninsula. They are beautiful from the ground level, but they look even more epic from a quadcopter.

Way Above Laucala Island

Burning Man or a Toddler?

Here is a list of 18 things that are identical if you are attending Burning Man or parenting a toddler! How funny and true! 🙂

Daily Photo – Way Above Laucala Island

Every day I stayed on Laucala Island, I got the quadcopter up as many times as possible. Charging batteries is always a pain, so I had to make sure I saved enough charge to fly at sunset. Almost every sunset was perfect, and this was one of my favorites.

Close-Up of the Harbor

It’s Podcast Time Again…

There are now 8 episodes of my audio podcast available on your favourite streaming services (iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify or in some regions Google Play).

In this weeks episode with Doug Moores, he and I are walking along the coast on the North Island of New Zealand near Te Arai. Doug does many things… podcaster, healer, yogi, builder, and well, you name it! Our talk spans from everything consciousness to psychedelics!

Monolink at Burning Man at the Mayan Warrior

This guy is one of my favorites… and a great set too.

Daily Photo – Close-Up of the Harbor

Remember yesterday’s shot of the harbor, this is a close-up on another evening. You’ll notice how different and dramatic the skies are each evening. This is one thing that I like most about taking photos on islands… you almost always get incredible skies as the sun is going down. That only seems to happen about 20% of the time here in the mountains.

Daily Photo – Docking at Laucala Island for the Evening

Fiji has a lot of beautiful places, but this one may be the best! I was lucky enough to stay here for about a week and explore the whole resort. Over there on the left, you can see the pool. What you can’t see is how absolutely gigantic it is! They say it’s the 2nd biggest pool in the Pacific Ocean.

Over Laucala Island

Hot Gaming Suggestion!

Try the new full release of Astroneer! I’m playing it on Steam now… very fun!

Daily Photo – Over Laucala Island

Here’s one of the many amazing villas that are scattered around the resort at Laucala Island in Fiji. It’s one of those situations where you never see your neighbors and you feel incredibly private. So private, in fact, that I spent most of my time inside and outside completely nude. I don’t know why I needed an adverb in front of nude. The word itself is already complete.

Heading for Dinner on Laucala Island

DMT

I had my first DMT experience a few weeks ago and it was truly awesome! If you don’t know much about this stuff, I recommend a book called “How to Change Your Mind” by Michael Pollan. It’s in my list of books on Kit.com.

There are several restaurants at this rather amazing resort. They’re all incredibly beautiful. If you squint a little, you can see a few lights there in the trees just before the islands gets skinny before the peninsula. I took this shot with a drone using that 9-picture panorama Super Zoom option so that it came out to about 10,000 pixels across.

A Lesser Known Square in Venice

Passport Sunday! Video Edit behind-the-scenes

I recently visited an amazing place in Fiji called Laucala Island. I’m old friends with the General Manager there and I primarily went there to take photos. But, while there, we decided to add a video to the mix. If you’re a Passport Member, you’ll hear more about the client work agreement that went into this and see how I  edit the video. I’ve gone back-and-forth with their marketing team a few times, so I’m trying to make everything perfect for them, being an over-deliver kinda guy like I am!

Quadcopter Tutorial

If you’re a Passport member you also get full access to my all-new Quadcopter tutorial that will hopefully save you countless weeks of trouble, as you learn from all the mistakes I have made! There is a great section at the end about editing video too that I think you’ll enjoy.

(For everyone else, the tutorial is 50% off in our store today…)

Video Edit behind-the-scenes of the Fiji Project

I used Screenflow Pro to do all the editing for this video, even though I actually recommend Final Cut or Premiere for more serious videos. Screenflow was just barely strong enough to do all the heavy lifting for this one. Anyway, in this video, you’ll see how I chose to edit and re-organize this video based on client feedback.

Daily Photo – A Lesser Known Square in Venice

I found this place by accident when I was arriving into Venice and trying to find my digs for the Biennale. I now know my way around the confusing town, but it’s really kind of a drain when you are dragging a big bag all around the city with you. Most of the effort is getting up and down over dozens of bridges… and there is always a sinking feeling that you’re going completely the wrong direction and will have to go back over that same bridge again!

The Infinity Pool

Viewbug

We may be having a big contest for Luminar over on Viewbug soon. Stay tuned for details! If you’ve never been over to Viewbug, now is a good time to go sign up and see what they’re up to!

Daily Photo – The Infinity Pool

The only thing missing from this infinity pool is some female with a perfect body in a bikini, right? In a lot of ways, that feels like a very obvious shot, I think. It’s a pretty enough pool on its own I must say. I can also make the case that the scene is more interesting with a person in there. I don’t know… I go back and forth on this. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I both want to put a person in there (male or female), and also I don’t want to because it seems so obvious. This is a nice duality to think about without any conclusion.

Floating in Fiji

Passport Sunday How-To

Today’s how-to if you’re a Passport Member is how I created this photo out of nine different shots. It was a fun (and relatively easy, actually) one to process. I’m not one of those guys who makes things seem more difficult than they really are! 🙂

Editing a 9-photo panorama with adjustments in LR

In today’s edit, you’ll see how (and why) I took 9 shots from the new Mavic 2 Zoom and made some adjustments in Lightroom before bringing the whole shebang into Aurora. BTW, in case you have a lot of extra money sitting around, you can go check out this resort at Laucala Island.
