Facing the Fearbeast
Daily Photo – Facing the Fearbeast
This was one of my favorite pieces out there – Facing the Fearbeast by Tigre Mashaal-Lively & Make Love Visible. It’s this incredibly scary snarling dragon-thing that is hurling the worst things possible to the small child who is just a bite away. It says stuff in a demon-like growling voice like, “You are not worthy of love” “Everything you touches turns toxic and to poison” “Nobody really likes you” “All your projects are bound to fail” – this sort of thing. The traumatic stuff you hear as a kid or an adult either externally or internally. Okay, but there is a twist! You can see the boy has his heart out there… and if you hold it, then in a very kind, angelic voice it says, “I love you” “You are amazing” “You have so many friends and family that love you.” Anyway, it’s quite a moving and visceral piece.
Serene Smile

There are so many art pieces at Burning Man that inspire me and this was a simple and beautiful one with a serene smile. I try to spend at least 8 hours a day out there taking photos. It’s really quite exhausting riding my bike all over creation to try to see everything. This doesn’t make me the most social person during that time because I’m kind of on a one-man mission to find things that inspire me.
Nerding Out
Daily Photo – Nerding Out
On the night of the Temple burn, I went way out into the deep playa to get a photo. I do this pretty much every year now… well, 5 out of the last 11. Anyway, I was out there by myself and I saw another photographer show up. That is rare! And so I chatted him up – nice German fellow… I asked him why he was out so far away from the event. And he said, I’m trying to get a Trey Ratcliff shot! And I was like, well that guy is a hack… and then I told him and we had a sweet hug and nerded out on camera stuff while taking photos…
