Porto – Stuck in Customs

Daily Photo – By the River in Porto

I think this might be the most underrated city in Europe! Most people that go to Portugal only hit Lisbon, which is great indeed, but this little gem is only a few hours north. It’s where I began my 100km hike on the Camino de Santiago. I spent about a week here exploring the city, having a ton of amazing food, and taking photos. Even better, the whole place was very inexpensive. It’s a great destination and I could not recommend it more, so definitely split any time you have between Lisbon and here. 🙂

Amazing Kuala Lumpur

Porto Perspective

Here’s a little video I made for my friend Jose in Porto, Portugal! You can find his //photo tours here/..

Daily Photo – Amazing Kuala Lumpur

It was fun to go back to Kuala Lumpur after being gone for over seven years. You still can’t go wrong with a photo of the amazing Petronas Towers and the KLCC area. This one I tried shifting the temperature over into the Incandescent area. This is a good trick to try for a few of your cityscape shots. When you go into that area (called Tungsten in some white balance settings), you get this cool Blade Runner kind of feel.

Man with Cat in Porto

Netflix recommendation

At first, I didn’t know if I actually liked “The Kominsky Method” but the more I watched, the more I liked it… I like a lot of different comedies, but this is one of the smarter ones.

Daily Photo – Man with Cat in Porto

I entitled this the way an Impressionist painter might entitle their paintings. Their painting titles are often really boring in English, but they sound great in French. For example, Monet’s “Women in the Garden” sounds so much better as “Femmes au jardin.” Renoir’s “Two Sisters on the Terrace” is improved by “Les Deux Sœurs Sur la Terrasse.” The titles sound even better while eating a French pastry, especially when you hear, “S’il vous plaît arrêtez de manger ma pâtisserie.”

Porto at Night

AirBnB

If you’ve never tried AirBnB, you should definitely give it a run! I used it about five times during my trip to Portugal and Spain. I was never disappointed. Well, that’s not true. One of them was pretty inexpensive, and it wasn’t really that awesome. For example, the toilet seat had one of those cushion things, but there was an actual NAIL in it or something that would puncture your butt cheek. I forgot about it EVERY TIME I sat on it. I don’t know how I kept forgetting about it, but it both hurt and made me feel very stupid.

Daily Photo – Porto at Night

What a city, eh? This is one of the coolest and most unique bridges in the world because the top level is for pedestrians and trains and the bottom is for cars. It was designed by the Eiffel, the guy who made some tower in Paris or something. Porto is one of my favorite cities to wander around at night with my camera.

Beautiful Porto at Night

An Aerial Video from Porto!

This is a quick quadcopter video I made from Porto, Portugal for my friend Jose who has a photo-tour company there called Pictury Photo Tours. He didn’t pay me to do it or anything… was just doing it to be friendly! I love Porto so much, and if you ever end up going, definitely look up Jose!

Daily Photo – Beautiful Porto at Night

At the very end of the evening, we ended up down on the riverside with Jose and his family. We drank port right here along the river and took photos. That was such a fun time and the end to the perfect evening. After this, we somehow made it back to the bus then off to Madrid for another fun day!

Inside the Harry Potter bookstore

The Whole Staircase

Here’s another photo I posted last year of this same location. It’s a must-visit in Porto! It’s called “Livraria Lello”!

This is a detail of the stairs from above. What a beautiful place, eh? I kind of was bummed out that the stairs were scuffed up a bit. If I owned this place, I’d make sure these stairs were always as red as can be. I was too busy taking photos to do any book shopping… besides, my reading list is already flowing over!

The Harry Potter Bookstore in Porto

Hot Tip for this spot

Now in this legendary bookstore below, they don’t let you use tripods. This was a real buzzkill for me, so I tried my best with handheld (but not bad, eh?) – anyway after I was there I got a hot tip from a friend. If you get here in the morning, an hour before opening, the cleaning crew will let you in with a tripod so you can take your time and get the shot you want!

Daily Photo – The Harry Potter Bookstore in Porto

My friend Cliff from Google tipped me off on this place. He sent me his own photo and I go, “I gotta get in there!” Even though it’s a real bookstore, you actually have to buy a ticket around the corner to get inside. I thought that was a bit strange, but they do subtract the cost of your ticket if you buy a book, so that’s pretty cool.

This is a vertirama made from two handheld photos.
