The Milky Way over Milford Sound

Low F-Stops on Star Shots

Veterans already know this, so you guys can just skip over this part! But if you’re just starting to get into star photography, one of the most important things is having a low f-stop on your lens. This means a LOT of light can get in over the exposure. For example, this was taken at f/1.4. The downside to this is that these lenses often tend to be much more expensive! But, then again, you can end up with shots like this one below! 🙂

My friend Cliff and I stayed out late one night in Milford Sound to see the Milky Way. We were not disappointed! Sometimes it gets pretty cloudy over here, and there was just one night, so we were hoping that karma paid off, and it did!

Here’s some footage taken with Google Glass while recently in Japan. You can also see me shooting my friend Lindy Nsingo in the middle of the busiest intersection in the world. At the end, I have a little slideshow of my favorite shots from the area. You can see the full-screen versions of all these photos right here.

You can also see my friend Brian Matiash trying sushi for the first time… some craziness at a Marble Slab Creamery, some street photography in Harajuku, and other random things like me breaking into a maid cafe because I was too lazy (and embarrassed) to stand in line!

Tide App?

Does anyone know of or use a good app to keep track of tides near your location? I always forget to check when I am near beaches… and then I get there and wish there was a quick way to look! It would be even better if it could download the info and it was available offline since I often don’t have internet at remote locations!

Daily Photo – Reflections at Milford Sound

One of the coolest bits of visiting Milford Sound is all the little reflection pools that appear in low tide. It’s usually hard to get a perfectly clear reflection of Mitre Peak off the waters of the fjords because of winds. Sometimes in the morning it is still, but usually not. But there are at least ten or so of these little reflective pools around and about. On this particular day, I was lucky to get that moon in position over the peak! What are the odds?!?! Not high I tell you!

If visiting Milford Sound, one great piece of advice is not to go all the way to the water’s edge at low tide. Some of the best shots are from the still reflection shots of the puddles that form from the retreating water. There are hundreds of these little pools. Some are clear without rocks and others have rocks. I decided to move around until I found a nice sequence of them.

I just spent three days in Milford Sound, New Zealand. This is about a four hour drive from my house. The bad news was there were no clouds for sunset. The good news was there were no clouds for star shots that night! Cliff and I stayed out there quite late to make sure we got all the shots we wanted! For this one, I tried attaching the Nikon 16mm f/2.8 prime via an adapter to my Sony A7r — it was very easy and worked like a charm! 🙂

Daily Photo – Reflections in Milford Sound

Here’s one of my favorite images from Milford this last year. Right after the big New Zealand Workshop, I took the team down to Milford Sound for the evening. The night was kind of moody in the lighting, but the next morning made for some great shots! Oftentimes, the best reflections are not in the sound itself, but in the huge puddles that are left behind at low tide, like this one.

We didn’t bring the whole workshop down here because the weather is just so dang unpredictable! We got lucky the first time, but did not want to press our luck. But for those of you that signed up for the workshop in 2014, we highly encourage you to take a side-trip down here! It’s only 4 hours from Queenstown, and certainly worth the drive!

Paragliding Update

Yesterday was a good day of learning to Paraglide. Tomorrow, I do a SOLO JUMP from the top of Coronet Peak. If this is my last blog entry, well then, I was honored and happy to spend so many years with you. Truly.

The breakfast here is incredible, but I took this photo way before breakfast! I was down there just recently to do some shooting, and I woke up early to go get photos of the sunrise in Milford Sound. That is the time that the water is the calmest because of the lack of wind. So, I woke up extra early and headed out to the truck. I was there with part of our team from Stuck In Customs, but I think the only people that actually woke up was Curtis, Pete, and me! Anyway, as soon as I came out of the lodge that morning, I saw this scene.

Daily Photo – Waterfall over the grave in Milford

This is Bowen Falls in Milford Sound, and right at the bottom is a very old grave that you can hike to. It’s not an easy hike, but you can get there if you are crafty. It’s the grave of William Ward Rathbun, and there is an old iron fence that is falling apart around it. It’s all very scenic and grave-y.

Across and Through Milford

Camping in Milford

I remember sleeping outside one night in Milford. I was pretty cold, but I had a great sleeping bag. There was a tiny little hold in the top of my sleeping bag, and around 3 AM, a possum came and stuck his face and mouth into the hole! It scared the living Jesus out of me… man, I’ll never forget that one.

I love sailing through the fjords of Milford! I’ve done this a few times now, and there is always something new and a different kind of light.

I think a lot of people are disappointed if they get to Milford Sound and it is raining. I would not feel that way if I were you because things can perhaps be at their most dramatic! There can be a ton of little waterfalls and crazy clouds even in the middle of the rain. So don’t let the rain dissuade you from taking the boat out and about!
