It’s hard to pass by these restaurants and NOT picture yourself sitting outside to have dinner by the canal. That’s kind of what it’s all about here, eh? Whenever I walk by a cafe or restaurant and see people sitting outside, eating, and enjoying themselves, I am thinking, hey, that looks pretty awesome, that should be future me, or maybe even me right now.

When you’re in a photo-taking mode all day, it’s hard to put down the camera at night. Since every day in Venice was filled with photography, it always bled into the night as well. And since it was the middle of Carnivale, then people kept looking awesome all day long. No matter how tired I got, I could not walk by someone like this and NOT take a photo.

Speaking of photo adventures (yesterday’s post), here’s one we did in Venice! It was my very first Carnivale, and I didn’t expect to get so many photos of people in costume. I didn’t know if you had to pay money to these people or what. It turns out you don’t! They just will sit there and pose literally all day long. They love it! It’s like what they were born to do… and so it’s great practice for a photographer to get out there and work on portrait photography.

If you go to Venice, I recommend you pay a bit extra and just rent a water taxi to drive you around in the late afternoon and sunset as much as possible. Just mow up and down that central canal and take little side-canals whenever you like. The water taxi is great because while the driver is whisking you around, you can then shoot in any direction.. forwards, backwards… whatever you want. And there is so much to see that you’ll be busy the entire time!

Even though I went out on at least five occasions and just dedicated myself to taking these sorts of photos, I feel like I should have gone out twice as many times! It was really my first time experimenting with the 90mm Hasselblad lens, and it seems ideally suited just for this kind of shot.

I don’t do a lot of these abstract scenes, but I do quite like the way this one turned out… I didn’t know for sure if these long shutter techniques would work well. There’s a lot of experimentation if you want to try something like this yourself. Of course, a tripod is mandatory, but then just switch into manual and try different shutter speeds and adjusting the aperture until you get the lighting you like. This one was 3.2 seconds.

During our famous costume party in Venice, this was my friend Magnus tearing up the dance floor! He was there with our really fun workshop, and this was one of the final events. Magnus was really funny because he has this thick accent… and he was having back troubles the morning before this masquerade ball. He came limping up to me, hobbled over like an old man, holding a cup of coffee, and in a very serious voice, he mutters, “Trey, this is not a party body.”

A few weeks ago, I posted a similar photo from the streets of San Juan. This is one of those “lay-up” shots that I often go for. I find a fairly symmetrical pedestrian walkway (usually better than roads), then set up with a tripod for a long exposure. It’s just satisfying for some reason!

This was taken with my first Hasselblad, and it’s one of the photos that made me fall in love with it. I do love my Sony too, but this one a bit more. This was shot at an extremely high F-Stop and you can just sort of see the sharpness in it, eh? This was shot in San Rocco in Venice.
