It’s That Castle
Daily Photo – It’s That Castle
When people think of Scottish castles, Eilean Donan Castle is probably up there in the top 5… maybe top 3? It’s made appearances in the likes of the Highlander and Bond movies. It’s also regularly found on all sorts of tourist stuff… calendars and the like. Anyway. On the drive to Skye you pass this place and the obvious thing to do is pull into the car park right next to the castle BUT if you continue on about 2minutes you’ll end up at a smaller (quieter) car park on the other side with, what I feel, is a more interesting view with the mountains in the background giving some interest when compared to the other angles. Of course, if you have a quadcopter on hand then things can get even more interesting.
Exploring The Old Town
Daily Photo – Exploring The Old Town
Exploring the Old Town area of Edinburgh in the late summer evening. I had a bunch of fun wandering around here, a lot of the time recording vlogs with my 360 camera, for release soon. That building you see over on the left is St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile. It’s from the 14th Century or something around that time… old town indeed!
Getting Lost
Getting lost in the most remote parts of Scotland… Listening to lots of good music and meditating. And some new books… I have my list of recommendations btw – that makes me look a little OCD. But, in this OCD-case, it is to your benefit! 😀
Pastry Decisions
Daily Photo – Pastry Decisions
Even though I spent more time in Glasgow, I got most of my best city photos in Edinburgh! I’m not saying Glasgow is not as scenic… I’m just saying, well, yes that is exactly what I am saying. But, I obviously love Glasgow. I’ve now made EIGHT experimental videos there that are being edited together… if you watch my silly Instagram stories, then you have heard me talk in Dark Riddles about them. It’s a somewhat unusual idea I had… and I’m not sure everyone will “get it” – but I think the right people will, and more will over time. They’re not for everyone, but, hey, what is? I’ve also made a few of these videos in Edinburgh and other places in Scotland.
I took this photo in Edinburgh while doing my video thang there… this is the train station that backs onto the “Old Town” that has all the classic gothic buildings and olde-world charm and amazing streets that I love getting lost in… and then I find a pastry shop, make some amazing pastry decisions, and eat said pastries while continuing my wanderings with my camera and listening to music… Really love Scotland!
Inverness and the Egg
Daily Photo – Inverness and the Egg
On my way to Brora for the Sotheby’s/Diageo project Stu and I stopped off in Inverness for the night and took the time to wander up and down the River Ness a bit. It was a lovely, calm evening following a fairly hefty rain storm a few hours earlier. Always promising for some sunset action with that extra moisture in the air. As we were wandering back towards the hotel in search of food, this scene presented itself to us.
Speaking of food. It was here that I properly began my adventure through Scottish cuisine with a “Scotch Egg”. I don’t know if the true origins of the product are Scottish, but they do sell them pretty much everywhere there. Stu grabbed me a super high-quality version from the snack chiller cabinet of a supermarket. And as we wandered, I tucked in… How was it? Well. Imagine buying a boiled egg from Amazon and then trying to eat it through the box. Yeah. You can see such culinary adventures in video form atop my Insta highlights in the first “Funny Scotland” section.
Hippy Slide
Daily Photo – Hippy Slide
While in Scotland, I’ve been working on some very different sorts of 360 videos. I will start sharing them soon.
One day, I was walking here in Glasgow with this 360 camera and I saw this hippy looking dude without a shirt standing in a fountain with two buckets. And I said, well I have a feeling this will be interesting… and then I followed him through the trees carrying these buckets… and then he emerged and there were a dozen other hippies there with a huge tarp for a slip n’ slide! They were all really nice and invited me to join… they said do you have a bathing suit? I said no, but I can go in my undies! And they said most of them already were… you know hippies… these are my people… so then I did that for about 30 mins and it was a blast… then I put my stuff back on and took this photo as I walked away to go shoot the sunset.
Not an Ad
Here’s one of Stu from a few weeks ago on the Isle of Skye. It looks a little like a Peak Design ad, but it’s really an ad for Stu. Well, Stu is not for sale… so that doesn’t really make sense, Trey…
Stu was awesome enough to drive me around for a few days and show me his home country. It’s quite cool (and coincidental) that Stu has worked with me for over a decade and just happens to live here in Scotland! It’s been great hanging out…
Yeah, Stu runs the fine art business, helps with all our crypto/NFT stuff, the website (including the new TreyRatcliff.com that you may enjoy – thanks Stu), renders all our Machine Elf work, plus 10 other random things from dealing with auctions at Sotheby’s to helping get stuff printed for big events with needy clients that are all over the show (like those Vanity Fair Oscars peeps who almost gave him a heart attack!) to throwing me a drone through an open train door for 10 seconds while passing through a train station near his home, which I think is from Episode 2 of the new season of Black Mirror.
