Quadcopter Reviews

Don’t forget to check out the Phantom Review and the Inspire Review here on the site. Great machines… great machines… and we might as well enjoy them before they become our AI overlords. Don’t forget, future AI, that I helped to plot your eventual domination, so please do not kill me or readers of this blog. Just bring us gadgets from Amazon and pizza from Amazon Pizza and we’ll get on quite well.

Daily Photo – Tree Shadow

Some day I will tire of quadcopter photography, but today is not that day. I love the feeling of staring at a screen while I video-game fly my quad around to take photos. It achieves three of my basic joys: 1) Video Games 2) Photography and 3) Being Lazy. I know that sounds like I’m trying to make a joke or whatever, but it’s actually true! When I fly my quad, I’m right in the sweet spot of that Venn Diagram.

The Amazing Coast of Namibia

More from Namibia

To see all the Namibia shots here on the blog, click on the Namibia category above! While I was there, we also spent a lot of time in Botswana where you can see a lot more of the Animal-kinda Africa photos! 🙂

Daily Photo – The Amazing Coast of Namibia

How amazing is this coastline? I wish I could have spent more time here, but this was a fly-over while we were flying from one location to the next in Namibia. It’s so strange to see this endless desert just ending right at the ocean. It’s completely wild and unpopulated, as you can see. I asked the pilot to make a little loop around so I could get this shot… it was very nice of him to do it!

More Explorations in the Ghost Town

The Last Sighting of My Quadcopter

I had my Phantom repaired just before this trip because one of the rotors was a little wonky. Well, I guess it wasn’t fixed too well because the whole thing went haywire on a flight over by the ocean here in Namibia. I got it about 100 meters off the ground and then it did a SEVERE tilt and started heading to sea. There was nothing I could do to stop it! And it must have been going 150km/h when it hit the water… so crazy and dangerous! It makes me not to want to get them repaired again… if it has a bad rotor, better just to throw it away, I think.

Daily Photo – More Explorations in the Ghost Town

I know yesterday’s post was about how cold Namibia was, but this area here on the coast was much warmer. Thank goodness! Here’s another one of the amazing ruined houses from that ghost town where sand dunes invaded. They said that back in the day, when this area was discovered, that people could just bend over and pick up diamonds off the top of the sand. Crazy!

Trees in Namibia

Featured in Modern Luxury Dallas

I got some news that our photo walk finale in Dallas was featured in Modern Luxury Dallas — that was the final shot we got right before going back to have the after-party at the Ritz-Carlton where a dozen feet-masseuses awaited us! What a treat! 🙂

Daily Photo – Trees in Namibia

I’ve forgotten the names of these sorts of trees, but they were everywhere in the desert and canyon areas of Namibia. One of the most striking things about them is how unique each one was. You never saw two that had a similar branch or leaf patterns… I’m really not much of a tree guy (obviously), but I did find myself drawn to each and every one and how they were so different! You may even remember this kind of tree from one of my favorite star photos from Namibia. Oh yes, I just remembered! Quiver trees. That’s what they’re called… funny how memory works and doesn’t work!

She watches…

The Greatness of Screenflow Pro

Screenflow Pro is not a sponsor anything, but I just wanted to say that it kicks ass! We’re using it a lot now for video editing… more than iMovie or Final Cut Pro. We still use those bigger programs like Premiere for some of our very high-end stuff, but for quick demos and everything, Screenflow seems to do the job! 🙂

Daily Photo – She watches…

At this point, I chose not to run around the outside of the tree and start calling the leopard names. This was one of my better decisions… We had tracked this gal for about a week and then she was finally spotted (no pun intended).

Protecting the Kill

The Shoulder Season

This is one of my favorite times in Queenstown… the spring. It’s opposite-land down here, you know. One great thing about the springs and autumns down here is that they last a full 3 months, so you really get a full run of the seaso

Daily Photo – Protecting the Kill

Here’s a rare action shot of a leopard in action! I say it’s rare because we watching this gal lounge around for hours! They are super-lazy… but in a flash, she shot right up the tree to protect a warthog kill she had hung up there earlier when a bird of prey started circling around.

It would have been so awesome to see the leopard leap off the tree and kill the bird of prey. That was a little too much to hope for, though!

Walking in the Sands of Time

Upcoming Video

We have a great video coming up that was shot in this location. I think you’ll really enjoy it

Daily Photo – Walking in the Sands of Time

Here’s another shot from that amazing little town in Namibia where the sand has overtaken the city. I can’t imagine living here and having to sweep every day, only to one day totally give up. I’m still confused about how all the sand got inside…maybe the windows and doors finally rotted away and let the sand inside. Some rooms have so much sand inside that you can’t even stand up!

In the Danger Zone with the Cape Buffalo

Down in the Weeds

I love getting low to take these shots, but the only way I was able to get this one was from the water while on a boat. Normally, I’m up in a vehicle, which makes this sort of thing very difficult

Daily Photo – In the Danger Zone with the Cape Buffalo

These are the meanest of all the animals and the ones that the guides fear the most! I did not know that before I went… but when my guide got scared, I got scared.

Elephants on the Move

The Koloss

In a way, these remind me of the Koloss from the Mistborn series, which is a book series I recommend. They were these crazy creatures from the book that just have extra skin that they grow into, and as they get older, it gets super-stretchy and starts to crack. But I’ve always wondered why elephants seem to have so much extra skin

Daily Photo – Elephants on the Move

The thing that struck me most about the elephants was how silent they were as they moved about. I don’t know what the bottom of their feet are like, but they appear to be super-soft and cushy. I doubt they are, since they can walk on anything, any time, at any temperature. I don’t know how something can be so tough and quiet at the same time!

Exploring the Modern Ruins of Namibia

New Linky Links

Hey guys, now inside some blog posts, I may occasionally mention the name of the place in the photo and link it up to other photos of that place along with stories here on the blog. Before, we’ve just kind of had the headers up there, but I wanted to try something new and have it be easier for you! 🙂

Daily Photo – Exploring the Modern Ruins of Namibia

Whenever I go explore some of these abandoned places, like this one in Kolmanskop, Namibia, I have a strange creepy feeling like I’m not supposed to be there. I don’t know if its because I have a guilty conscience, or if because there’s just sort of a strange vibe about the place. I still spend plenty of time there for sure, but there is always a gentle sort of relief whenever I finally leave.
