The Soft Sands of Namibia

Close Up Sand Crystals

Here’re some really beautiful photos of what sand looks like when you get really really close! Follow this link!

Daily Photo – The Soft Sands of Namibia

It’s hard to believe that the myriad of colors above, en masse, results in this. I wonder why the resulting color is often light yellow/tan. I suppose, putting on my color-mixing hat, that when you mix together a lot of red/green/blue and clear/shiny/white that you end up with this color. When you mix all those paints together you get black, and when you mix all that light together you get white.

But sand has properties of both paint and light because it both absorbs, reflects, and refracts light. So, then, my color-mixing-hat says sand should be somewhere between black and white, so a gray. But sand isn’t gray… then, peering deep into the hat, it makes sense that there are not many Blue crystals, since that’s the least common rock color, giving the Red and Green a higher relative count, whose reflective light mixes into a Yellow color. And then mixing a Yellow with Grey results in the typical “sand” color.

Rene on the Tarmac

Another Africa Trip?

I’ve been thinking about planning another one of these… maybe this time for more of an animal safari. I’m thinking about 2017 some time… Really looking forward to going back! This time, I may bring the kiddos – I think they would really love it.

Daily Photo – Rene on the Tarmac

Here’s one of the first photos I got after our merry traveling band of artists got to Namibia. I think it was something like seven plane flights to finally get here. Everyone was itching to take photos, and I got started a little early here on the runway. This is the closest Rene will ever get to being a runway model.

Rose n’ Bel

Season 1 Coming Along!

Here’s one of the many photos I processed during Season 1 of Becoming an Artist! This was a particularly fun episode! 🙂

Daily Photo – Rose n’ Bel

I think it’s funny to watch girls like this frolic around together in a photoshoot. They’re like two cats, batting back and forth a ball of yarn. I can’t imagine two guys up here, posing for the camera and acting silly. Can you imagine me and Rene doing this? It sounds insane, and it would be. There’s no way we could pull it off. Well, maybe Rene.

Trey From Above

A book suggestion!

Try “The Untethered Soul” from Michael Singer.

Daily Photo – Trey From Above

I don’t do a lot of selfies, and I’m not even sure you can call this a selfie because Curtis took this with a quad. But I was shooting here, then I looked to my right and left and saw this shadow wrapping around me. I thought it might make a cool quad shot. I knew Curtis had the quad out and was shooting some video, so I called him over and took control for a minute to hover over this spot while I went back to take another photo! 🙂

Daily Photo – Devil Bel

When we were inside this amazing ghost town in Namibia where the sand has overrun everything, I asked Bel, who was filming me at the time for Becoming an Artist, to make an evil shadow in the sand… and she instantly made some bad-ass devil horns! If you see one side of her looks a bit disfigured like she has gout or something — that is actually her sound-pack on her belt.

Daily Photo – Bel on a Walk

This is one of the biggest sand dunes in the world, and Bel was absolutely rocking up this thing. We had about eight of us decide to walk up together. But we were going way too slow, so she just walked on ahead. It was amazing, actually… it reminded me of that scene in Lord of the Rings when Legolas was walking up on top of the snow when the rest of the Fellowship was trudging through it.

High School Tech

My son Ethan goes to Wakatipu High School and it’s super-high-tech! I went to one of these orientations where they were telling us about this “point” system they have. It’s unexplainably complex, but it was really cool to see how they are using the internet to keep track of everything. Also, everyone uses Google Classroom there and it’s super-slick. It’s so different from my high school back at Jesuit Dallas! Night and day really!

Daily Photo – The Desert Rose in a Pool

Wow, she hated being in the water, but what a trooper! We had a whole workshop with us in Namibia and she was so striking that I asked if she would mind getting in the pool so I could take some photos. I like how most of them turned out… this is kind of one of those one-off shots between the “real” ones.

Something secret coming from Africa!

From the Heart of Darkness itself, we have made something Very Awesome from Africa! I don’t know when we’ll be releasing it, but I’m super-excited to share it with y’all.

Daily Photo – A strange scene in Namibia

It was a very cold morning in Namibia. I had no idea that Africa was gonna be so cold! I didn’t bring nearly enough warm clothes… the nights were especially rough. Anyway, one morning we went out to take some photos and I looked over at my travel friends and saw this rather strange scene. I had to take a photo because it was so surreal! 🙂
