Swimming with Whales

Speaking of whales (below), I’d really enjoy swimming with them, I think. I’ve swum with a pod of wild spinner dolphins in Hawaii, and that was really great. I also really enjoyed my time with the elephants in Botswana… so I think I need to get whales on my list next!

This is a favorite photo from Bora Bora. I’ve always enjoyed looking at those aerial photos from space and seeing how the ocean water changes as it brushes up against some of these sorts of islands. My local friends there told me they can walk up to the edge and almost touch the whales as they migrate along the coast.

This was another perfect day in Bora Bora. The sun was out like 90% of the time and it was never toooo hot. For me, it was a little too hot to walk everywhere barefooted. I could do it in the morning till about 2 PM, but then it got too hot for my lame, sensitive feet. I honestly do have fine porcelain feet like a vintage Victorian lady. I hang out with all these super manly dudes in New Zealand that go on 10km runs barefooted and stuff. I find that beyond my vaguest comprehension!

Paddle Boarding on Smooth Water

A Small Difference in Height

I think I had the Phantom up about 20 feet here, which was just enough to see over the heads of these two. It just makes a huge difference in the photo with a small difference in the height!

This was taken with the Phantom 2 with the GoPro camera… The Phantom 3 has a WAY better camera, but I do wish it automatically took photos like the GoPro did

Here’s another shot from The Four Seasons in Bora Bora. I watched people paddle board a few days before I went for it myself. It turned out to be super easy on this smooth water. I took Ethan out into the more choppy part and things got a little hairy out there… especially when we started attacking each other!

Now this doesn’t always happen, but it certainly did this time. I was lucky enough to be in Bora Bora for a week straight and got to see a week’s worth of sunsets across this view. Amazing! But usually I am taking photos before the sunset, and when the sunset comes, I immediately “upgrade” all the pre-sunset shots! You know, I thought it was pretty before, but when the sunset actually hits, all bets are off and the photo is actually 10x better. But this one was an exception… the build-up to the sunset was pretty dang awesome too.

I got in the habit of taking morning photowalks around the property here at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora. With these over-water bungalows, there is almost no bad angle! It’s so nice to be able to fall out of bed and kind of stumble/amble around, half awake, and see things like this. I was often so morning-groggy that I barely had the wherewithal to actually take a photo! But when I saw this nice rainbow in the distance, I mustered all my focus to try to take a decent shot!

Another Sunset in French Polynesia

Using Mirrorless Cameras to view an Eclipse

I don’t know why this never occurred to me, but it seems like a fairly obvious thing to do! I mention using my Sony below to do this since you can look directly into the sun, but you’re only seeing an image on the sensor. I should try this with a powerful lens and tripod next time an eclipse rolls around!

Daily Photo – Another Sunset in French Polynesia

I swear. 95% of the sunsets in this area must look as amazing as this! It is just kind of a photography heaven I think! I’ve never seen such consistency. Also, since I now live up in the mountains, I never really get to see the sun dip below the horizon. I tend to be a _little_ more fascinated with it than normal. Another nice aspect of the whole thing is now that I am using mirrorless cameras, I can stare right into the setting sun without having to worry about damaging my eyes!

Walking Into the Water

Communicating a Feeling in a Photo

If you’re stuck in a rut and trying to figure out a new take on things, try to communicate a feeling rather than try to take a picture of a “thing.” In today’s photo, I am kind of explaining what that feeling is for the sake of illustration, but maybe you can reflect on this and see if you would have had this feeling anyway, without me telling you.

In this photo, I wanted to communicate the feeling of how warm and welcoming it is to walk into the water here in Bora Bora. It’s one of the most inviting things in the world to walk through this soft sand and slowly get deeper. The water is pretty much body-temperature, so you don’t even wince when the water level hits your nether-region… I’m honestly pretty wimpy in cold water… give me this warm bath water any day!
