I spend most of my time in Yangshuo… Just thinking about it again is getting me excited! 🙂

This is a great city to watch from above. It’s so electric and buzzing underneath the cool night air. It’s so electric, in fact, I thought perhaps maybe there was legalized gambling here. But of course, there is not. The only place gambling is legal in China is in Macau, and I look forward to going there one day… it looks absolutely insane!

To get to this spot, it was a rather sweaty climb. It’s one of the most popular hikes in the area, so you can’t miss it, really!

Walking Through Yangshuo

A buddy with an umbrella

Can I tell you what a luxury it is to have someone hold an umbrella for you in the rain while you take photos? It is unbelievable! I love to shoot in the rain, and always struggled with also holding an umbrella and trying to operate all my equipment. Plus, I refuse to get one of those hat-umbrella things… I must have at least a little bit of dignity!

Daily Photo – Walking Through Yangshuo

This was the only moment in the night where it stopped raining long enough for me to get a shot with a tripod. I took many other handheld shots this evening with my other Sony A7r, using Leica lenses. Of those, probably only 10/200 turned out interesting… but I was happy this one came out good. I do like to set up for the occasional wide-angle shot to try to capture the whole scene.

Every morning here near the Li River is different. I walked all the way up here one morning only to be surrounded by pea-soup the entire time! This time I woke up again at 4 in the morning to come up here to try again. This time, I was rewarded with some truly beautiful mists and foggy cloud layers that made everything feel like a dream!

Daily Photo – The Fisherman and his Mindmelded Cormorant Bird

This was the wildest thing I’ve ever seen. I got in close to this fisherman on the Li River, and he had his trusty bird-friend right behind him. No matter which way the fisherman turned his head, the bird looked the exact same way. It reminded me of the daemons from His Dark Materials. I have about 6 frames I shot where they are all looking in the same direction as they rotate their heads… I wish I had it on video!

This is a Cormorant Bird, and they have a little ring around their throats so they can’t swallow the fish they catch… the fisherman takes the fish out of his mouth and puts it in a straw basket at the back of the bamboo boat. The ring is just wide enough to let little fishes go through…

(this was taken with the Sony A7r and the Leica 24mm at f/1.4 – processed with my Lightroom Presets – “Fire of the Chandrian” I think)?

This is at the top of a rather sweaty and humid climb a few days ago here above Xingping in Guangxi, China. In fact, it may be the absolute sweatiest I have ever been. I remember starting out and going slow thinking… okay… I’m gonna take it easy… gonna take it easy… and then the heat and humidity hit and I was like… awwww no…. it’s on now… it’s on… so then I just started working it all the way up. Oh man – clothes were flying off left and right by the time I got to the top… but I got there just in time to take this photo!

These out-of-the-way places are some of the best for photography because the locals actually like photographers from the west. About 98% of the time they find us interesting and worthy of a smile. They seem to like the attention we give them with our cameras and there are many smiles to be had.

I don’t take a lot of photos of people smiling, because I like to take photos before people notice or right as soon as they notice. Usually though, everyone smiles after I take a few… I do a few facial maneuvers so that they feel more comfy.

The new version (iTunes Link) was released yesterday.  We have 755 reviews at a 4.5 star average – that is incredible, so thank you very much.  Now, what is new?  We fixed many issues with Flickr and Dropbox, added memory fixes, and integrated the new Twitter for 5.0.  Enjoy!

That link is to the iPad version, even though we also have one for the iPhone. I recommend the iPad version if you have a choice — it has many more features than the iPhone version… you will see what I mean!

I was many kilometers down this river away from the town.  I got off my little boat to do some hiking up through the hills through the jungle. It was dense.  Even when there was a little opening, it still felt like leaves and vines were pressing in on me.  On occasion, I would see a wider break that let me see into the mysterious beyond.

I don’t have a lot of time, but I’m always up for experimentation.

After a while, my boat driver thought I was insane. We started before the sunrise and kept going, and going, and going, and going… he kept giving me the international head movement for “we really should be returning for a spot of tea,” but I kept motioning him further up the river.

To me, the river got most interesting when we saw no more people, except for the occasional fisherman that still had remote hut for his family along the river. I had plenty of battery power, amazing music on my iPod, a full array of snacks, a ton of drinks, and nothing to do for the rest of the day and night… so I was perfectly content just going until our gas tank reached 50%. And that took a long time… and who would want to stop with views like this around every other turn?
