In the Bedouin Village

Getting off the beaten path

When you travel to strange places, I always advise to go ahead and do the touristy things but then see if you can do anything special to hang out with the locals. It’s not always easy to figure out how to do this and takes a bit of legwork! …but always worth it.

Daily Photo – In the Bedouin Village

When we were in Oman and went out to explore the desert, there was a really interesting stop at a Bedouin’s home. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was invited in and sat down on some carpets. The whole home was open to the air in a way, adorned with many small decorative carpets and pillows along the tented walls. After I sat down, the man of the home offered me some extremely strong coffee, then his whole family with kids sat around me. I pulled out my iPad and shared photos from around the world. The kids loved it and we all laughed together even though we didn’t speak the same language.

Camels in Qatar

Video from Qatar

Daily Photo – Camels in Qatar

We took the family out for a camel ride in the desert in Qatar because, well, why not! The funniest thing was that Ethan’s camel was really grumpy and would just make ridiculous noises the whole time. This pleased his sisters to no end!

Fields from Above

Preparing for Battle

I notice most of the time when I go out to take photos, it’s not a hotel-room 72 degrees F! So I am either bundling up or preparing for a sweat-lodge. There’s no in between… like here in Bali, for example, I just prepared for a whole day of sweating. It’s good to bring an extra towel, as Douglas Adams warned us.

Daily Photo – Fields from Above

My whole life I’ve seen photos of rice fields and always wanted to see them in this terraced formation. I did see a few in China, but they were not even impressive enough for a photo. They were a bit dull, and not terraced, you know? But then I got to Bali and was able to see many of them… just as amazing as I have imagined. I understand the ones in the Philipines are even better, so I hope to see those some day too.

Bottles in India

Cool Video

If you’re into astronomy, this is pretty basic stuff, but it’s a fun thing to share with your kids. I don’t think a lot of schools show this aspect of our solar system.

Daily Photo – Bottles in India

While I was in Bangalore, I began a little personal challenge to take 500 photos a day, little “studies” of objects in their space. I didn’t plan on publishing any, and I won’t publish most, but here is one of those little studies. I have so many photos that I still don’t know what to do with… I was thinking about starting another blog called “Trey’s Rejected Photos.” Maybe it would be interesting? I don’t know…

Entering Phulay Bay in Krabi, Thailand

Autopano Giga

Be sure you try that program if you’re into making panoramas. The interface is perhaps so obtuse that they should change the dictionary entry for obtuse and just put a hyperlink to download that program. I do show how to use it in one of the episodes of Becoming an Artist.

Daily Photo – Entering Phulay Bay in Krabi, Thailand

What an amazing entrance to the Phulay Bay resort! We initially arrived at night, but I made a note to return during the day to get a photo. This one was actually extremely difficult. I was using the Hasselblad and did not have a wide enough lens. So this ended up being a 3×3 panorama (9 shots). Stitching them together is always a bit of a chore… it comes out looking all wonky so there is lots of post to make things look right/interesting!

Sunset in Bali

The Next Morning in Bali

Here’s a FB Live thing I did while in Bali… this was the next morning!

Daily Photo – Sunset in Bali

We went out on a little photo excursion one afternoon and evening. It was great fun! We started by visiting a few different beaches then ended up at this magical place in the evening. There were no bad pictures from any angle. It was a shame I only got to go here one night… but driving around Bali and exploring was a great experience. I look forward to going back some day and seeing more! ๐Ÿ™‚

Running Off Into the Sunset

Photo Walk Reminder!

Don’t miss today’s Photo Walk in Sydney! And also don’t miss the big workshop event tomorrow as well… it’ll be epic! ๐Ÿ™‚

Daily Photo – Running Off Into the Sunset

There’s one of my girls, running off into the picture when I told her not to! But then, I realized it was actually a better picture with her in it! Seeing this reminds me we gotta get the kids to more beachy places. They never get tired of playing on the beach… those kiddos! It’s especially nice to think about now because it’s the middle of a cold winter in New Zealand! This photo was taken at Phulay Bay in Thailand.

Drama Church!

iPad Pro

At first, I didn’t think I’d like it so much… just seemed too big. But now that I have it, I really dig the thing. Photos look absolutely incredible on it, and it’s also great for games. I even love reading on the thing… it’s so big I don’t even have to turn the pages that often. I feel it’s like reading one of those old giant encyclopedias.

Daily Photo – Drama Church!

I was walking on the beach one night in Bali here at the Ritz-Carlton. I don’t remember ever seeing a church or any kind of religious thing at any hotels before… so this one really stands out because of its architectural impact. I knew there was a storm coming, so I went out here on the beach to watch it for about half an hour, trying my best to capture some lightning, and then I did it! As fast as lightning, they say.

Another day, another quad shot! They are becoming more and more regular, eh? I notice I have a different workflow for processing these shots. For example, usually, right after a flight I go back and dump all the photos into Lightroom. Then, almost IMMEDIATELY, I process all my favorite photos. I don’t mess about.. leaving them in LR for days, months, or years, as I do with my other unprocessed photos. I am not sure why this is! Maybe there is an excitement factor or something.

The Sheer Cliffs of Thailand

Video Throwback

Here’s one of my favorite videos… I made it right when I moved to Queenstown, New Zealand!

Daily Photo – The Sheer Cliffs of Thailand

Right around here is that same island the bad guy owned from that James Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun. I never made it there… it was like another 30 minutes by boat. I was quite tired of being on a boat by then… getting thrown around for a long time kind of takes the energy out of you!
