Eating at Gumbo Limbo

Photography Tip Trick

So for this one, I used one of my old tricks to get people to be still in the photo during a long-exposure HDR. It’s hard to tell from looking at the EXIF because this was made from 4 different photos… But first I made a longer 3-exposure HDR, and then I took a series of quicker, high-ISO photos when these gals were in an interesting position. After I made the HDR, I masked in the still ladies. There was a bit of noise for sure, but you really can’t see it too much.

Daily Photo – Eating at Gumbo Limbo

Here’s one of our family’s favorite new restaurants! It’s called Gumbo Limbo and it’s here between the beach and the Ritz-Carlton in Naples. It was the perfect place to watch the sunset, have some drinks, and watch the sunset.

Sunset over the Gulf of Mexico

Waitng out the Storm

Here’s a hot little photo tip… if there is a big storm at sunset, just wait a little while and don’t give up. If you have a view of the horizon, at least half the time the sun will make a final quick appearance and give you some amazing light. I feel like people that live on the west coast or near west-facing-water already know this… but it’s something I often have to remind myself!

Daily Photo – Sunset over the Gulf of Mexico

What a pretty way to end the day! This was my first trip to Naples and my first trip to the west coast of Florida. Obviously it makes sense to me, but I always thought of Florida as a place to see the sun rise but not the sun set. I guess that’s because I had spent all my time on the east side. Anyway, each night we were blessed with amazing sunsets… This one was a great one because it was a stormy day and I didn’t know if the sun would dip below the clouds or not. Finally, at the last second, it did! I took this photo from outside our room here at the Ritz-Carlton in Naples.

Family Beach Yoga!

Naples Fun

This was my first time in Naples and it was great! The beaches are amazing and the weather was great. It was good to get in some family beach time for sure… the girls in this family love the beach for sure!

Daily Photo – Family Beach Yoga!

One great thing about staying at all these Ritz-Carlton hotels around the world is that the concierge and the team set up amazing activities. You don’t just have to sit around the room or the pool – they create really fun experiences. And it’s a good way to force the kids to do things they don’t normally like to do. For example, my son Ethan hates Yoga, but he just goes along with it when there is another authority figure (other than my wife or me!) involved.

High Above Amazing Bali

Bali Workshop?

I was planning on getting back to Bali to do a workshop, but I just haven’t had the time! Don’t worry โ€” it’s still on the list! ๐Ÿ™‚

Daily Photo – High Above Amazing Bali

Both Ritz-Carlton Resorts in Bali have amazing top-down views when you enter the resort. Jaw-dropping might be the best way to say it! ๐Ÿ™‚ This is the Nusa Dua location, where I’ve stayed multiple times. This was also the location of one of our community service efforts where we brought in a nice group of orphaned children and we spent the afternoon and evening taking photos together. What a great group of kids!

Banana Veils

Taking photos of Muslims

I think a lot of westerners are scared of doing this. I love it, and have never had a problem. It’s always a good idea to get permission first… and I usually ask the elder male if it’s okay. The culture is more than a bit patriarchal, naturally, but once you get through that, it’s fun photo time!

Daily Photo – Banana Veils

I met these two girls from Saudi Arabia when I was in Istanbul. I walked down a totally random street while being somewhat lost. These girls were holding fruit in front of their mouths and taking selfies. They were there with their dad and brother. I gave them the happy nod, and they gave me one back, so I started taking photos. And then we all got out Snapchat (I’m treyratcliff on there) and I sent them a bunch of Arabic sayings back to their friends in Saudi. It was really fun… very nice people!

The Final Night

The Devialet Phantom

As I’m writing this, I’m listening to a rather amazing speaker โ€” the Devialet Phantom (the 750 Watt version). It’s just incredible. It comes in “louder” varieties like the 3000 and 4500 Watt version โ€” but I think those are a bit overkill!

Daily Photo – The Final Night

During our last night in Krabi, Thailand, Tina and I took a walk along the beach here to take some photos. Everything was extremely dark, so I decided to make a different sort of photo. Something more mysterious and filled with darkness. If you want to see some more photos from this night, be sure to click on the Krabi category above! I have a few of my daughter up there in those lit-up trees as well.

The View from the Ritz-Carlton Berlin Penthouse Apartment

Berlin Art Show

I gave a little talk during the event and it was recorded on Facebook live. Here it is below – enjoy!

Daily Photo – The View from the Ritz-Carlton Berlin Penthouse Apartment

I was lucky enough to stay here for several nights during my art show in Berlin. We had a fun party up here after the art show as well… there’s this one secret bookcase that slides back into the wall. That’s always a big hit! I feel bad that I wasn’t really there long enough to enjoy it… it was such a beautiful spot, but I was so busy running this way and that, I didn’t have a lot of “peaceful relaxation” time… but maybe when I go back!

The Maiden’s Tower

Back to Istanbul?

It was a hard decision for our upcoming European tour, but we’ve had to mark Istanbul off the list. Not for safety reasons or anything… mostly as a matter of convenience. I’m sorry to my Istanbul friends, but I promise to come back! ๐Ÿ™‚

Daily Photo – The Maiden’s Tower

I didn’t have enough time in Istanbul to visit this little island and go inside the Maiden’s Tower. I was lamenting that for a while, but then I decided it actually looks better from further away. I think that photographers think about destinations differently than other tourists. When I consider visiting a place like this, my first thoughts center around “what is the best perspective?” This is usually a strange line of thought because I need to figure out how to get AWAY from the object so that it looks as interesting as possible.

Riding on a bus in India

Bangalore Fun

Here’s one of the highlight videos from Bangalore during our family trip there!

Daily Photo – Riding on a bus in India

I took thousands and thousands of photos on our recent family trip to India. I don’t know if you’ve been there or not, but if you’re spending any time in cities, you’ll know how crazy the traffic can be. You can literally spend hours and hours per day in traffic. So I took to taking a lot of photos out the window. I’m obsessed with photography if you can’t tell! It was a fun exercise for my mind to see how many “scenes” I could capture as the world went by.

Exploring in Bali at night

Aurora HDR 2017

Don’t have Aurora HDR 2017 yet? Grab it now! I use it to process all my photos. And no worries, yes yes, we are working on the Windows version right now! ๐Ÿ™‚

Daily Photo – Exploring in Bali at night

I was at one of the two Ritz-Carlton hotels in Bali (this is the Mandapa Reserve) and exploring at night as usual. Once you get into HDR, you begin to take special notice of “topics” that would look particularly good in that context. I notice that I’ve become much more sensitive to texture, color, and relative saturation of nearby colors. Even when just walking by a scene, like this one, I make a note to come back and get a photo of it later!
