New DJI Phantom 4 Pro

DJI has updated the all powerful Phantom with the pre-release of the new Phantom 4 Pro (Available January 17, 2017), and what an incredible machine it is. DJI was nice enough to send me one early to try out. There are a few major differences between the Phantom 4 and Phantom 4 Pro, some of which are game changers!

New features:
- 1 inch sensor, which is 4x bigger than the the P4. This means it collects 4x as much light and is far better in low-light situations. (Think sunrise / sunset with less noise!)
- 20 megapixel photos vs. just 12
- Integrated LCD screen. It’s extremely bright and convenient. No need to use your phone and it’s always ready to go and easy to see in the daytime.
- 2 more mins of battery time
- A bit faster
- 4 areas for obstacle avoidance rather than 2. This enables many more autonomous flight modes.

Chefchaouen - Now, here is a place where the military police shut us down with our quadcopter! I came into town with Anton and Ana from SmugMug to work on this cool new promo piece. We had been already using Anton's quadcopter all over Morocco, but when we got here, the taxi driver alerted the local military police that we had some sort of a “plane”! This caused a lot of worry and consternation (and, I should add, a Significant amount of confusion). After we were there for half an hour, the military police descended on our hotel with a rather sour attitude. I've never had any success negotiating with the Moroccan military, and I had no success here either. I did put up a good intellectual fight, but I eventually acquiesced, mostly because of the size of their guns. Well, there was no gunplay… but I did see a lot of guns… which always helps one side win an argument.
You might have noticed that I have NEVER posted a photo of the moon. Why is that, you wonder? The main reason is because I’ve always gotten absolutely terrible moon photos. Until now! I finally got one that I am kinda happy with… I shot this in the morning when I walked out to my studio.
I went through this dodgy area of Fes one night to try to climb up a hillside to get a view of the mountain. It was actually perfectly safe, and everyone was smiling and happy. I now know how to speak just a little bit of Arabic, at least enough to get by. I thought this run-down area was actually kind of beautiful in its own way, so I set up to take a photo…
I don’t know if I was lucky. Okay, I was lucky.

I happened to be driving down this rather wonderful road in Utah just as the moon was setting. I’m not one of those mega hardcore photo-nerds that knows every moonset and the status of the moon… I kind of wish I was. Or, I wish I had a little helper monkey that would inform me of these things. But, I just occasionally get lucky and have my camera with me. Or, rather, I always have my camera with me, and, like a stopped clock is right twice a day — it’s the same with the full moon and me.
This particular location in The Shard doesn’t really h
