Daily Photo – Tina Guo Ripping Up String Instruments

What do you get when you cross an out of control BDSM scene with a cello? You get Tina Guo.

Anyway, what’s so cool about this gal (where do I start?) is that she’s a total badass on stage. She looks angry and she’s about to rip the face off the first man she sees. Anyway, that’s what I see. Maybe you see something different. But then, off stage, she might be the nicest and sweetest person on the planet.

Sunset in Krabi

Check out my Kit!

I’m always making updates to my kit.com that includes everything from my favorite books to my recommended camera gear to my crazy gadgets. Of course, sharing this goes against my minimalist, non-consumer inner drives. I don’t really have a lot of stuff, but, for the stuff I have, I choose stuff that adds to my life and does not subtract from it.

Adobe Bridge How To

We received a nice email from a Passport Member asking about Adobe Bridge and how I use it. I realized I had never made a video about that before, so this was the perfect opportunity. In this video, I also share a little bit about my workflow. Enjoy!

Daily Photo – Sunset in Krabi

Here’s another crazy sunset I saw while in Krabi, Thailand at the Ritz-Carlton Reserve. To be totally honest, I felt like a very lazy photographer when I was there. It was just too easy to waltz out of my room, get my bare feet in the sand, and then set up to take a photo. Here’s a fun word for you… Crepescular. That kind of light that is shooting out from the clouds is called “crepuscular” light. I don’t really know why that is interesting other than me enjoying the texture of that word.

The Abandoned part of the Great Wall of China

Passport Sunday Party at the Great Wall!

I had a great time re-creating this photo in our latest video for Passport Members. Today you’ll see how I remade this one from scratch for your viewing pleasure. Actually, I’m still working on it a little bit. There are a few more changes I have in mind, but I’ll share it here as a work in progress!

By the way, here’s another part of the Great Wall that is abandoned. This is a view from above, taken from a drone.

Daily Photo – The Abandoned part of the Great Wall of China

This was one of my favorite trips to the Great Wall. Maybe because it was my first time! Anyway, I got a room at this place north of Beijing called “The Commune.” It was a very strange hotel, I must say, but kind of cool in its strangeness. I stayed here specifically because they had access to this old, classic part of the wall. It was a very lonely trip; that was for sure. But I quite enjoyed being the only one on the way for hours and hours.

The Treetop Temple in Kyoto of Kiyomizu-dera

Passport Sunday Party!

Today for Passport Members is a special and fun edit because you get to see me re-master the photo from Kyoto below and transform it into the new version. This is the 2nd of 3 photos I am re-mastering for Series 2 of the fine art series at TreyRatcliff.com.

First, here is the photo I made about 7 years ago. I still quite like it… but I think I’ve improved upon it a bit.

Kyoto Remastered

Want to follow along and edit with my same files? Well you’re in luck because here are my 5 RAW files for this temple in Kyoto.

If you’re enjoying Passport, why not recommend it (or gift it!) to a friend? It’s a great present because people get new stuff every week! Think of it like a wine of the month club, except it’s weekly, and without the wine. That’s not the best sales pitch I’ve ever made.

Daily Photo – The Treetop Temple in Kyoto of Kiyomizu-dera

Ahhh, beautiful Kyoto! It’s one of my favorite cities in the world, so going back to re-master this one, seven years later, was still as much of a joy as the first time. It was also great to use better tools like Aurora HDR. to give it a better “look.” Before, I think I might have just used the sliders in Photomatix and not even done any touchup in Photoshop. I’ve also learned a lot more about color theory and this sort of thing in the time betwixt.

New Re-Mastering Video for Fine Art on Passport Sunday!

If you are a Passport Member then you get a special treat today! I am just releasing Series 2 of the fine art over at TreyRatcliff.com and decided to go re-master this one from Patagonia.

Passport!

Hey here’s the video of me working on the final image. You can see how I dealt with a lot of different problems. One thing I forgot to put in the video is how I gave the mountains a little bit of vertical stretch at the end… or as I like to call it, Mountain-Viagra.

Daily Photo – The Knife

When I went back to re-edit this one, I had to fix up more than I first thought. Something happened with some of the fringing, which was very very difficult to fix. If you watch the video, you’ll see all the trouble I went through. It reminds me not to move the sliders too far in one position because it can cause tiny little niggling problems that you can’t solve later.

Over Monte Carlo

Euro Tour

Check out this highlight video of our European Photo Walk Tour!

Listen to Sam Harris talk with Yuval Noah Harari (author of Sapiens)

Also, here is an interesting podcast I just finished listening to where Yuval Noah Harari talks about his new book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. It is a wide-ranging discussion which is well worth some of your Sunday.

Passport Sunday – Art Talk in Glenorchy

If you ever find yourself in New Zealand, check out Camp Glenorchy as a place to stay. I was there a couple of weeks ago to do an art talk and not only is it a gorgeous location, but they also have the best projector known to humankind. In today’s Passport video, which is the complete talk, you’ll not get to experience the projector in all its glory but you will get to hear some stories from my travels along with a fun Q+A session towards the end which focuses on art, life and creativity.

Daily Photo – Over Monte Carlo

On the European Tour, we stopped in Monte Carlo one day to take photos and have a dinner before getting back on the bus to drive overnight to Cinque Terre. I had been to Monte Carlo a long time ago with my dad and I remembered being down by the marina. When I looked at the map, I saw there were two marinas, and I was not sure which one to be dropped off at. I chose the wrong one! And there were no taxis or Ubers around, so we had to walk up this mountain… when we got to the top, I turned around to take this picture of the scene below. Yeah, it’s a cool marina, but not as cool as the one on the other side!

Daily Photo – Little Girl Running at Burning Man

How cute is this little tyke? I saw her running in the deep playa with her parents. I asked if I could take a photo and they said, “Yes, Please do!” And so I ran beside her for a few minutes until I got the shot… Wow, I tell ya, it was exhausting. These kids have so much energy! Anyway, I used one of my new Festival Presets to get this shot.

Photo Organisation

Want to see how I organize all of my photos in Lightroom from Burning Man? Wow, it is always an evolving process. I’m not saying this is the most efficient system in the world, but it certainly works great for me. Maybe this will give you some ideas on how to organize your photos!

Daily Photo – Lost at Burning Man

There is a big auction soon in San Francisco to raise money for Burning Man artists. I might end up going out there for the big event. I believe I have four pieces going into the auction, and I guess we’ll see how they do. I don’t currently offer any of my BM work in our Fine Art series at www.TreyRatcliff.com – so this would be a good way to snag one of them, There’s more information about the event at the Artumnal Website.

Fine Art Prints for Passport Sunday!

The Final Touches

Thanks again to Curtis and the rest of the team for getting the new site finished at www.TreyRatcliff.com! I think it’s looking pretty spiffy. The blog here is very casual… I talk in a very normal, laid back way… hey that’s how I really am! But for our Fine Art site, I wanted to make it a bit classier, you know. I mean, I’m a classy guy and all. Well, kinda.

Anyway, if you’re a Passport Member, you’ll see a video today where I talk all about how we price prints, how we sell to collectors and this sort of thing. Enjoy!

Happy Collectors

Here’s photos of a few of my prints hanging in homes around the world.

Behind the Fine Art

I’ve never really made a video like this. I’m a bit sheepish about this sort of thing, because I don’t like talking about money and this sort of thing. In a lot of ways, I think it can sully things. But, well, business is sort of a way of life. Anyway, in this video you get to hear a lot of details about how we price and sell fine art. Enjoy!

Adding a Gradient in Luminar

New Presets

Hey, you guys DO have my new Festival Presets, eh? If not, you gotta get them! They are so fun! Anyway, today for Passport Members, I show how to add an additional gradient on top of the preset to give it a special look. Enjoy!

Here’s a promo for the new presets… Thanks again to Stephan for doing such a fun edit on this!

Gradient Fun

Sometimes I like to have a “transition” in my photos. A common thing I do is have a conversion from warm to cool colors. This quick little tip shows you how to make that happen.
